Williams states in the beginning that she is “one of the 15 percent of the U.S. Army that is female.” What is one reason why she enlisted in the army?

Williams, all her life, has been treated as a “woman”, meaning men looked down on her and wouldn’t treat her equally. One reason she decided to enlist for the army was to prove to herself that she can do anything. In her relationship with Rick, Williams feels betrayed when Rick told her that he’s married. From here she decided she had to change herself, and push herself to her boundaries. However, despite his marital status, Rick gave Williams a lot of confidence in herself, again pushing her to do something she didn’t seem possible. She had been using drugs and acting like a punk from a young age, so enlisting for the army was something completely opposite to her previous actions. Williams could have chosen any other course of action, but enlisting for the army made sense, because she realized that in order for people to stop controlling her, she had to be in control, and nothing gives a sense of self-control like the army.

ENG 2100: Writing Spaces assignment 10-25-15

1. The 5th myth is one that applies to me. I often proofread my essays over and over again, and limit my ideas to fit grammatical correctness. I believe that a good essay requires perfect grammar, but that’s not the case. Gertrude Stein, for instance, uses whatever grammar she likes, and it has a profound effect on the essay.

2. College level research requires the use of scholarly articles, ones found from databases. High school research doesn’t require much, just basic methods including search engines. Skills I need to acquire to do good research include the ability to find and use articles to my benefit, by finding different parts these articles that strengthen my paper.

3. An argument is the representation of a viewpoint in disagreement with another or multiple viewpoints in a topic. To argue in a college-level essay means to write an essay that encompasses your perspective on a topic and proof of why your perspective should be considered over the other ones. The author uses the comparison of persuasive writing as a courtroom, where the writer is the lawyer defending the defendant and the audience is the jury, who must decide if the defendant is guilty or not.

4. Three kinds of academic writing include the closed, semi open, and the open writing assignments. Closed assignments will give you an option between a few answers, where you must choose amongst them. Semi open assignments require some analysis, where the person answering must dig the treasure and provide reasoning. Open assignments require a concrete idea of what the question refers to before choosing a position and supporting it. The person answering this assignment will have to pick and choose topics and examples.

5. Three characteristics in effective writing include clear evidence, dominance of reason, and imagining having a rational reader. Evidence must be clear because these are the points which support your claims, so if the evidence in foggy, so will your argument, and the reader won’t be able to follow along. Writing based on reason as opposed to emotion also plays a big role because emotional arguments will have overwhelming passion and a lack of reasonable evidence. Writing for a rational reader, lastly, will have the writer writing his or her essay clearly and concisely, realizing that their essay should follow a simple structure so the information is readily available for the rational reader.

6. The author feels first person should be used only when appropriate. For instance, it should be used when distinguishing between your opinions and scholarly ones. Also, first person should be used in personal assignments.

7. It is bad to “I” sometimes. For example, it is bad to use “I” when writing a short summary. It is also bad when “I” is only used once or twice.

ENG 2100: The war was an important aspect of the reading. How, in Woolf’s mind, did life change before and after the war? What did war reveal about society?

The war was an important aspect of the reading. How, in Woolf’s mind, did life change before and after the war? What did war reveal about society?

One of the biggest changes in life after the war is that poetry turned from romantic to dark, unrelatable  pieces. Poetry, for instance, before the war was often related to the public, speaking about things people did normally. Now that the war passed, everything people did normally was done sadly, with the war still being looming over them, whether it be at luncheons or wherever. Poetry turned too strong, and became hard to relate to. What the war revealed about our society is that we become encapsulated by pain and anguish, that we feel a strong empathy towards those hurt by the war, including ourselves. We can’t get it off of our minds, and do everything we can to push through.

FRO 1000 Blog Post #1: Student Life Workshop

IMG_20150917_131902The other day I went to a workshop led by the NYC Music Industry club. Upon coming to the meeting, I thought this was simply a music appreciation club, but it turned out to be far more. Here, we discussed that club members often perform in live performances using a variety of instruments, ranging from the piano, drums, electric guitar, to instruments like the saxophone! The genres of music also have a wide variety, with jazz, rock, country, and even rap on some occasions. Club members sometimes form bands together and create music.

I plan to get involved by going to more club meetings. I play saxophone and the drums, so I plan to practice and then hopefully perform with everybody. Performing at a live concert seems like a great experience, and I would love to be a part of one. I’ll listen to music with a more discerning ear and get a feel for creating music, not just listening to it.

ENG 2100: How does the theme of home resonate throughout the excerpt?

Throughout the chapter, Toklas and Stein move from place to place, going to various parties, visiting Lane, living with the Whiteheads, and going to London and France. What is important to note is that when receiving news of the war, people should be together, not alone. In a friendly home setting, the inhabitants can discuss war, and lessen each others worries. If bad news comes, you have someone to rely on and a home to relax in. Home is a safe zone, where no damage can be done, only healed. In France, war is present nearly everywhere, except in most homes. In a home, you can relax, rethink your plan of action, and sleep. By doing this, Stein and Toklas’s actions have reason and facts behind them, and are performed optimally because they had time to recuperate.
