To be honest, I have not sought out any form of help from any of the school’s resource systems. Perhaps I shouldn’t admit that, but it’s not as if I’ve done nothing at all. I have been working with my group, and we have been trying to figure it out together. But this is not because of the “I’m an Honors student, and I don’t need help” complex, I promise. So far, this project has not been something incredibly difficult. Other than getting rejected by our first service group, we have been able to figure everything out by ourselves. It has really been nice to work closely with people that I met only two months ago. At this point, it seems like I’ve known them for much longer. I guess you might be surprised to know how quickly you begin to bond with a person when you are thrust into the same situation. Also, it’s nice to have John to talk to, who has been through all of these things. I asked him if I could wear my red suit that I got for Halloween for the presentation, and he said it would be fine. Now, I did not decide to wear it, but I love that he didn’t shoot the idea down. Especially since I wasn’t kidding (I just made the choice not to wear it. The pants are really tight and uncomfortable, and I did not want to wear them for the whole day).

I have joined the ECO club here at Baruch. Last weekend they went on a trip to the Aquarium in Brooklyn, but I could not actually go. It was disappointing that I had to miss out on it, but I had a ton of homework that needed to get done. Yay for time management and priorities. I actually go to the aquarium with my family quite often, usually around Shark Week. It’s awesome to see real sharks during Shark Week. Unfortunately, this did not effect my community service project directly.

Again, to be completely honest, my understanding of community service has not changed because of this project. I’m guessing that along with most people in this class, my high school had a community service requirement. My mother made sure that I did as much service as I could, regardless of the “required” number. It’s because of her that I really appreciate helping others, no matter what personal gain you might get. It makes a community service assignment seem less forced.

My current role in the Baruch community is SLAVE OF WORK just kidding but seriously, studying for the business midterm was not fun.

I actually feel like I have a duty to keep up a good work ethic, and maintain the respect of the Baruch Honors program. I owe it to myself, to my peers and to my professors (and John) to do everything that I’m supposed to. The program has gained such a highly esteemed reputation because of its students. Each one of us represents a piece of the school, and it should be our task to make the school look its best (even though we don’t have working escalators).

Serving my community can mean whatever I want or need it to mean (provided that it still pertains to the actual idea of service). It’s a huge privilege to be able to live and work in the type of community we all live and work in. So it is our responsibility to give back. The typical answer is to say “we can all do community service at a soup kitchen” or something like that. While that is true, it’s not the only thing that counts as service. When I can’t find my syllabus when I need it, I can always count on asking a friend to tell me what this assignment actually was (shout out to Anastasia). That qualifies as service, just being there to help out when you are needed. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a life or death situation, or help for the poor (it also CAN be, please don’t think I’m making fun of the poor..). It can just be help for someone who needs help on their own personal level.

Where am I going right now? I’m on my way back home for a couple of days. My brothers and I have some music to work on for YouTube, and are hosting a live chat at 4pm tomorrow. If you are reading this before then, you should watch it. Where have I been? Well I was just in the city in the dorms at Ludlow. It’s very nice there.

Now it’s time to get to know me. My name is Travis. I’m a tall kid from a small town called Croton-on-Hudson. We are mostly famous for our train station, and our large dam. Yes, it’s about as exciting as it sounds. Sometimes our high school wins sports games. I wear a hat almost every day because I like hats. Dinosaurs are my favorite animals, and I’m sad that they are all dead. I am in love with Selena Gomez because she is beautiful and perfect and wonderful. I have split my head open twice, neither times were very fun. The first time that happened was in the 4th grade. It shaped my beliefs in the sense that I now believe that gymnastics is a very dangerous sport.

As a college student, I expect to never go to high school again. I don’t think that will be a problem. I mean, I’ll have to go back there for different events and whatnot, but that’s ok. Actually, my younger brother is going to be in the school’s production of The Crucible next month. He is a good actor. He also likes macaroni and cheese. I hope that my first semester doesn’t leave me with any more head injuries. Save for Prof. O’Malley, I think that should be fine. I feel like if I show up really late, he might throw a book at my head or something.
