Writing Update
Hi Everybody!
So, I submitted my first draft early this morning and was not fully satisfied with it. There were alot of holes that need to get filled in and restructured from all of the constructive feedback that I received after my presentation on Tuesday. I have to admit, it is a bit tedious, having to go in and restructure writing from a slightly different view. But, after all of the work we’ve done throughout the semester, I know that it will only enhance my paper for the better. I guess, if you think about it, it shouldn’t be too complicated since the majority of the research is completed, its just about gluing the pieces.
Earlier today, I had the opportunity of meeting with another Baruch Professor who informed me of two Professors at Baruch with a lot of knowledge, research, and experience with the Young Lords. I really wish I would have known this earlier on, but still want to try to get in contact one of them this coming week to help me cultivate a coherent paper.

Hey guys so I started on my paper and felt scared writing it. I was getting writer block an felt confused I then decided to work on my presentation and things became clear. Im struggling with my last point of the argument because there is a lot of statistical data involved. I am stressed about this paper trying to figure out how to put information, but hopefully I will get through it

Staring Anew
Dear Class Members,
During these last few weeks, I have been struggling with my argument for in seeking to build a solid case in favor of transfer-focused vocational programs, I found that there was not sufficient data that could demonstrate the effectiveness of these programs. Furthermore, the studies that did demonstrate positive results and in some instances a significant increase in retention compared to general programs within the community college, seemed to raise questions with respect to who these programs admitted for it limited admission to students that successfully completed their remedial course load, which had been found to be a significant barrier for many students. Although I felt frustrated, I recognized that I had come upon a new opportunity and I diverted my focus toward remedial programs in community colleges. Connecticut has introduced a legislative proposal to end remodel education within community colleges and although the measure may seem drastic, it has prompted action and may induce educational institution to continue to build momentum around improving their remedial programs.

Rebecca’s Writing Update
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all had a good Holiday weekend! 🙂
I started writing a few pages over the weekend but I know that this week is going to be super hectic, it is really going to test my time management skills to the core. At a first glance, typing up two pages in such a short amount of time seemed overwhelming and a bit discouraging, causing me to procrastinate for a few days. BUT, once I sat down with the Argument Assignment and finished up my presentation for tomorrow everything seemed a lot easier. Those two assignments served as the foundation for my outline and aided in the direction and content of my paper. It is still overwhelming because I literally have 6 other papers due this week for other classes, but this is life.

Matthew, Research Update
Hey everyone,
Over the weekend, I’ve been working on my draft and preparing for the presentation. This has been extremely helpful in setting a foundation for the paper and I am aiming to have 10 or 11 pages done by the 29th (possibly more, but it seems like a safe estimate). Currently, I’m past the introduction and onto the first reason in bu I need to be mindful of the structure of the paper and not jump around and to make sure my reasons are clearly defined.

Research Update
Hello All,
This week has been intense. I already have started writing I have about 10 pages but I am having difficulty structuring my paper. For example, do I define bullying first ? Do I give a literature review first? Do I explain what is the problem and why we should care first ? Then I stop and I try to collaborate it all into one big intertwined piece where different paragraphs reference each other. I don’t know I have always had trouble with this part of writing projects. I am now organizing my presentation for tomorrow, I still have alot of work to do, its overwhelming but I do have my argument, reasons and evidence down so that puts me at ease. I still am unsure about my counterargument I have a few and Im unsure which one I want to choose I want to make sure that I stay within 10 minutes so I will begin rehearsing that now. I just realized we only have two classes (excluding the last class)so its crunch time!

research Update ( Dana )
Hello all,
I hope everyone had a lovely thanksgiving holiday, I know I sure did. On another note, the moment we have all been waiting for has come: Writing!! My draft is due tomorrow and I am beginning to write my research paper. Since the paper presentations I decided not to seek out more information but try to have a more “clear” understanding of the information I already have. For tomorrow I hope to have substantial amount of my paper completed, Lord knows I need all the feedback I can get. I’m looking forward to seeing other classmates’ research progression .
Good Luck,
Dana

Rene’s Research Update
Hi everyone.
So the time has finally come to start writing my paper. I started writing today. Hopefully I progress along nicely and not get stuck anywhere. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, the annotated bibliography assignment really helped me out a lot. After doing the presentation on Tuesday about my research progress, I feel even more confident. I know where there are certain ‘holes’ to be plugged, in terms of my argument and evidence. The questions and comments I received at the end of the presentation were extremely helpful as well. It allowed me to see what information I’m missing and it helped me get a sense of how to explain my argument as effectively as I can. As I explained in my presentation, one of the big challenges that I am facing is figuring out how to explain my evidence and how it supports my argument in the most simplest terms. I want the reader to clearly understand my argument and evidence, in the least confusing way possible. Hopefully I can achieve this goal and write a solid paper.
I hope everybody is having success writing their papers. Good luck to all.

Research Update
I have to admit, I am still thrown off by the Hurricane and have gotten out of the loop of consistently signing on to our Blog. Nevertheless, I have been outlining and beginning my presentation for next week. On the research end, I think I have a pretty substantial amount of evidence and what not to support the analyses that I’ve made, but that does not mean that I stopped researching. My focus now is on policies and communities that continue to sustain and advocate for progression within the Puerto Rican, and broader Latin@, community with respect to the contributions of the Young Lords. I already had some research in this area but feel a need to have more substantive support for this area of my research. And, since I am a visual learner, I have been looking into more documentaries for additional insight and reflection.

Celeste- Research Update
Hi All,
Since last we met, I’ve been working on gathering research for my paper. I’ve gotten a few articles and a few books on my topic, including one about the prison system by Michelle Alexander (thanks Professor Kafka), that I think will be useful in developing the explanations for my argument. The only thing I am having trouble with is linking the economics of a city with its race relations, but I’m hoping that will come together in the next couple of weeks.
I am presenting tomorrow, so I hope to give you guys a glimpse into what I’m working on, and look forward to everyone’s presentations. Good Luck!
