Final Paper!(dana)

I am finishing my paper, and  I just remembered I needed to blog! I hope everyone is progressing with their papers. Writing this paper has really been challenging, I really wasn’t  aware of how much I needed to cite,  until receiving my draft. But, I’ve working hard  to  make sure my paper is organized and cohesive. I know before handing it in tomorrow I will need to make a series of revisions.

Good Luck to you all, and see you tommorrow

writing Update (Dana)

This weekend I sat down to add more to my draft, I was a little bit unsatisfied with the amount I came up with. I was hoping I could have turned in more for the rough draft. Now  in the final days of writing,  I don’t know if anyone else is having this problem of  feeling overwhelmed  by the information. I find that many of the things I found interesting during the research process deviate from the purpose of my paper, I’m hoping the end result is not flat and boring.

research Update ( Dana )

Hello all,

I hope everyone had a lovely thanksgiving holiday, I know I sure did.  On another note, the moment we have all been waiting for has come: Writing!!  My draft is  due tomorrow and I am beginning to write my research paper. Since the paper presentations I decided not to seek out more information but try to have a more “clear” understanding of the information I already have. For tomorrow I hope to have substantial amount of my paper completed, Lord knows I need all the feedback I can get.  I’m looking forward to seeing other classmates’ research progression .

Good Luck,

Dana

Latest on my Research ( Dana)

Since our last class, I took time during the  weekend to read more critiques on regime theory relating to public responsiveness of welfare policy, and  I am now more confused on which side I support. Many of the writers acknowledge the variables aren’t measured empirically and are more aligned with theory. The critiques give sound arguments for why  characterization by regimes are flawed because they don’t  account for mixed Welfare States. I am now working out the kinks for my presentation tomorrow.

Dana Howell Research Update

Hello All,

So this week has been extremely hectic for me.   After re-examining my argument assignment I realized it was totally disorganized and many of my reasons were not properly backed up by the evidence I presented.  Im taking some time to re-read my sources and search for outside sources to help formulate a better argument. I am hoping that once this stage is complete some of my anxiety about writing this paper will subside. The realization is now kicking in, whether I will be about to find enough information to write a substantial twenty page paper. Is any one else feeling like this?

See you all tomorrow.

Dana Howell research update

Hello all,

I hope everyone is doing well after this stressful week. The sources I reviewed this weekend seem to present similar arguments regarding the relationship between social policy expenditures  and regime type.  According to Tor Jacobsen, written in the study ” “Welfare Attitudes and Social Expenditure: Do Regimes Shape ?” Attitudes are often rooted in value structures and the value structures are influences by national contexts, like regime institutions.(Liberal, Conservative and Social-Democratic) Leftist attitudes are   synonymous with opinions that are pro collectivism, and favorable of state responsibility and equality of incomes. Rightist s attitudes on the other hand, are characterized  by a preference for individualistic values and income differences and a more negative stances toward government intervention.

See  you all tomorrow

Dana Howell Argument

Hello Group 4,

The last time we met in class Rebecca gave me the suggestion to investigate differences in population make up. That’s was a great point. I came across an article in the Scandanavian political  Studies Journal which compares the American Welfare system to countries coined as”social democratic” nations: Belgium, Denmark, Sweeden etc. Social Democracy usually results in the evolution of capitalist economy to semi- socialist economy.  These Social Democratic Countries  have historically, homegenous populations.  Until very recently there has been an  influx of immigrants,  Social Scientists have theorized that natives do not harbor negative public opinion toward immigrants benefiting from the welfare system because: 1. unlike the US, countries have refrained from politicizing issues with ethnicity 2.  US citizens have deeply engrained view of welfare recipients as “lazy opportunists” ( capitalism)

Dana’s Research update # 3

Hey Guys,

I finally had  time to  read  some of the sources  I previously skimmed, and it seems as though my research is changing direction again. Originally, I  was interested in  analyzing how public opinion on welfare policy affected  spending on other “entitlements”. Professor Kafka said that I might have trouble finding the information I wanted and  that was correct. This topic is discussed in many of the sources I came across but, the journals suggest there isn’t a  sufficient link. I think I am better of doing a comparative study of the  American Welfare System with European Welfare. Many of the studies I came across discussed European Nations so I believe this is topic which could amount to 20 pages or more. Between now and Tuesday I really have to spend my time fleshing out some type of hypothesis, so I feel like I have some direction for this paper.

See you all on Tuesday,

Dana

Research Update (Dana)

Hello all,

After weeks of indecisiveness, I have finally decided  on my area of focus. I have found some articles related to how public opinions on welfare affect entitlements, but I think the information is not quite substantial enough for a lengthy research paper. I would like to continue with the Welfare topic, but I’m dissatisfied with the information I’m finding. I think I am going to broaden my net to encompass rhetoric, political ideology and  other chracteristics which can mold views on welfare. If anyone has any input on my topic, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Good Luck

Welfare Research Update

Since our last class session I have had several stints of “attempting” to find research to narrow my research topic. Upon reading the chapters in The  Craft of Research,  I think I have more of an idea where I want to go with this paper. I would like to research the historical stigmas and policies associated with welfare recipients. I still think my topic needs to be refined so, I’m open to any suggestions you guys may have. Also,I would also advise anyone who is still unsure about there topic to follow some of the sources given in the book.  Gale Virtual Reference Library is  a great reference for anyone  who wants basic information on their potential topic.

Good Luck with your Research,

Dana Howell
