Matthew’s Research Update
I understand this is late and won’t receive credit, but I will post anyway.
Over the past week, I’ve really tried to fill the holes in my paper as evidenced by my lackluster presentation. I was confused about my own premise as well as the reasoning of my argument and made strides towards fixing those and I believe I did.
I made changes to each of my reasons, in order to get the most concise and coherent statements and added really great sources to back them up, which was a blaring problem in my presentation.
I made some really great changes and am excited about finishing up this paper. In my first draft, failed to mention criticisms and suggestions; I will be adding those, too.

Matthew, Research Update
Hey everyone,
Over the weekend, I’ve been working on my draft and preparing for the presentation. This has been extremely helpful in setting a foundation for the paper and I am aiming to have 10 or 11 pages done by the 29th (possibly more, but it seems like a safe estimate). Currently, I’m past the introduction and onto the first reason in bu I need to be mindful of the structure of the paper and not jump around and to make sure my reasons are clearly defined.

Matthew’s Research Update
Hi everyone,
So, like all of you, I’ve been working on my annotated bibliography. I’ve found some very good sources so this assignment has been a successful one. Last week, I was having problems finding sources and have changed the keywords that I’ve searched.
I was having trouble finding articles on preventive care. I should have been searching the words “universal health care,” “universal,” “Canada,” and other more general terms. So far, this is working out very well.

Matthew, Research Update
Hi everyone,
I would like to say I hope everybody is safe from the effects of the storm last week.
Onto my research, I have formulated my argument (but am still working on the wording),which is “preventative care measures established in the Affordable Care Act are the best way to take care of the populations’s health and health-related economic issues.”
As for the presentation, I am always looking for new sources and trying new techniques, key words, and term searches and have been pleased with what I have found. Like many of my peers, I’ve noticed that simply trying new keywords and following the keywords allows for really great resources. I’ve also been looking at the references that are listed in the sources that I’ve read.

Matthew’s Research Update
Last week was very useful and I want to thank Carmen for her suggestion of focusing in one of our potential sources, as this has allowed to me narrow my topic.
I am researching the potential effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and I was having a hard time really focusing in on a subtopic. Ultimately I have decided to focus in on the positives of having a comprehensive primary care system, as the best way to battle illness and disease is to utilize preventative measures. Mariam and Maggie suggested I look at how preventative care works in another country such as France or Canada.
So, this has been a great week for my research.

Matthew’s Research Update
This [ast week I’ve been looking up new sources as well as reading some of the articles that I only had a chance to skim. Using the library’s database, I’ve been able to find quite a few more peer reviewed articles. Also, I have been reading documents released by the CBO based on their findings.
I’m having an issue because I’m not completely sure if non-scholarly or non CBO released articles and documents are appropriate due to biases of news organizations. But, on the other hand, I could use certain articles to dispel non-truths or myths put forward by different news sites.

Matthew’s Research Update
Hey all,
Sorry this is a little late so let me get to it.
Like most of my peers, I found the library session to be very informative. I have also searched through different databases instead of only using Academic Search Complete. I’ve also been following the trends of my research by looking at the “tagged” key words in order to find similar information.
One thing I would like to let the rest of the class know (if you didn’t already) is that you can set up a username on the database website and store information that you find useful. This really helps when jumping from computer to computer and everything is very accessible.
See you tomorrow,
Matt

Matt, Research Challenges
Hello Professor Kafka and classmates,
I find my research very interesting and am learning more about the Affordable Care Act and the views for and against the act.
One of my main issues is letting my personal views influence potential sources. I am for the Affordable Care Act for many different reasons and can be dismissive of certain articles and documents which is no help to my research. I don’t need to put aside my personal views but I do need to absorb views from the other end of the spectrum.
I hope everybody is doing great. See you tomorrow.

Research Update
Hello Professor Kafka and Classmates,
It is my intent to research the possible effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Not surprisingly, there are many articles, editorials, and other documents with which to work. I am having an issue with my research because much of the effects are speculative and the Act has not really had the time it needs to actually take effect. The issue is the political sway which is present in many of the readings.
One reading that I found helpful is a document released by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) in 2010. The CBO is a federal agency that provides economic analysis data to Congress and is currently headed by Douglas Elmendorf. After doing some research on the director, I found that Mr. Elmendorf has previously worked for the Brookings Institute, which is a liberal think tank. Even though this is a document released by the CBO I wanted to make sure I had a general knowledge of the background of the people who have put together this document. Even though Mr. Elmendorf has worked for a well known liberal think tank, I feel this is a great piece of research because the CBO Director has to be jointly approved by the House Speaker (currently a Republican) and the President pro tempore of the Senate (currently a Democrat). If both parties have to compromise and appoint one individual, I feel the individual is probably of the utmost credibility.
It’s always good to know where your research is coming from.

Matthew’s Introduction
Hello Professor Kafka and classmates. My name is Matthew and I am currently a senior with plans to graduate in February of next year. It is extremely exciting to say the least. I have very much enjoyed my time in the SPA program learning under many smart, experienced, and respected individuals and I am excited for this next step.
I am interested in fields ranging from economics to history to the arts but I hope to study health care and it’s policies. Up until a couple months ago, I interned for a New York City Councilperson. I am no longer there as I would like to branch out into different areas of the nonprofit and public sector.
I was born, raised, and live in the southern tip of Brooklyn and on weekends, besides reading and studying, I work in an ice rink making sure kids don’t skate into walls.
Currently, I am being called to wash dishes and take out the garbage.
