Salome— 40%
Hello class,
As the title of the post indicates I feel like in 40% done with my final paper. The first draft I turned in was not really my ideal because I wish I could have added to it. At the same time im glad I turned it in since it takes some weight from my shoulders. The biggest reason I didn’t feel good about the drat was because I didn’t develop my ideas well enough. I added explanations of the policies im discussing for about 2 paragraphs each so that gave te paper more substance. I recently had a incident where my research tabs got deleted so now I have to work a little extra to find the research again. The good thing is I have a photographic memory and I can recognize the web pages. The challenges im still facing are finding true statistics for public health economic costs. Many sources say use different numbers which are all relatively similar in terms of percentages but I would like to have concrete number for my own knowledge as well as for the paper.
My sources are also varied and im not sure which one to take out and which to leave. The issue there is that several sources provide similar information so im not sure if I should use one or more . Other than that, Im moving along rather well.
Salome part 8
Hi class,
who thought that a little hurricane could effect a life so much even if your area wasn’t the epicenter.
Over the unofficial brake Ive been reading my sources and getting to know the topic more. i feel confident that i know enough about the topic and where i can pull my evidence from which make me feel better. What I’m confused about is starting to put these things together I am not ready for the presentation but hopefully my group is gonna encourage me on this. My unofficial argument is: US government put Americans at risk of lower quality public health when the bush administration rejected the Kyoto accord. Various scientific research provides proof for this argument.
Salome’s research part 7
I went over my bibliography, corrected some mistakes and decided to not use some of my references. Some of them are repetitive so Im going to end up leaving those from more reliable sources. Because I plan to focus on the political aspects of the rejection on the Kyoto accord, During writing I plan to make the following arguments: The bush administration favored their economic well being above the public health of American people. United States government does not prioritize the environmental protection of its country. These will be my main arguments and after writing in this direction for a while, I should have a better idea about more specific arguments.

I really am frustrated with the bibliography process since I cant seem to understand what kind of sources I have. besides that I dont know if they are peer reviewed. only way i can find out is if i specifically look for the peer reviewed articles on a database but then i dont find most of them useful. By now I mostly have non peer reviewed sources, which is not bad however the citation is probably the worst part of my college life. I understand that I need to cite my sources and I have no problem with the idea but the technical process of periods and columns and capitalization is really unpleasant. I really hope my bibliography will be correct by sunday. I really dont want to look at the OWL website if I dont have to.
Besides that im learning a lot about my topic and I like it to which is rare during research.
Salome’s research part 5
Hello class,
This week I found many articles that fit the criteria of what I looking for in terms of information and argument back up. However I am still having difficulty recognizing where in my essay would this type of information or source fit. I still dot have an outline or for the paper and even though I have a structure in my mind I highly doubt I will follow through with it sine it will probably change once I start writing. Since I know I am the kind of person that needs a push, I am making it my goal to have 3 pages of at least something by the end of this week. (Preferably Friday). This way even if what I write is horrible, which it probably will be, I will then have something to follow up on or add to. This process will also guide me in the right direction of what type of keywords I should be looking for in during the research and it will build some patterns in the research.
At the beginning of the class I already thought I would have something solid written. This Friday goal will help me turn my procrastination around just like the last assignment for 10 references. It’s embarrassing that me; among with my peers still procrastinate so much. Ridiculous!
I can’t say I’ve had the best week with the research this week even if I found a bunch of new articles because I don’t have an organized idea of how I will use them. I do want to use them all however, I really think they are from a trusted source and backed up with evidence like we talked about in class. Also, I’ve been finding many economic reasons for not ratifying the Kyoto protocol but finding the political reasons are quiet difficult. My guess is that such reasons are hidden behind in the article. At least the standard Google search is not giving me anything concrete, just opinions of unqualified people from blogs.
See you in class.

Salome’s challenges post 4
I have been narrowing down my questions for the research and have come up with some broad and some more specific ones. they include:
Why didnt the US government sign the agreement?
Who first wrote or had an idea for the agreement (an individual of an organization)?
where US scientists included in drafting this agreement?
If yes (most probably yes) which organizations did they belong to?
List of some invorenmental protection agencie sin US and the world. have they issued an opinion about this agreement? they stand on growing pollution and recommendations for people.
Look for sustainable US businesses or famous NGOs that promote sustainability (NGO because it is related to public affairs and my work experience)
The main challange I am encountering dutrign this research is the pattern of more question sarrising. when i read an article or watch a little documentary about a topic there is a huge amount of information that makes other questions arise. because of this i often find myself forgetting my original question.
For the more specific questions like effects of the pollution and concrete consequences in numbers such as how much it will cost the US government to make a decision toward sustainability, I find conflicting answers. It seems that even experts disagree on the benefits of Kyoto protocol. Some say its great some say it wont make a difference. this brings up a challenge of not being sure if my sources are reliable. Most of the time I can see that the information is from a credited source, however ive been encountering many opinion articles that I dont know if i want to use.

Salome’s progress week3
Recently I’ve been doing my research by watching documentaries and related videos on the Kyoto protocol. This is a new approach for me and I am mostly doing it to familiarize myself with the scientific terms related and better understand the topic as a whole. This will help me understand what narrow questions to ask the search engines in my further research. In several videos it was mentioned that many economists believe that costs of maintaining this protocol outweigh the possible economic benefits. This point could be interesting to look into however, the cost on healthy environment is very hard to determine. I’m focusing on politicians’ statements and interviews from mostly last 5 years. This is a good alternative to reading the same interviews; personally I can understand the issue much better when I can see a person talking about it.

Salome’s next step
Hello class,
I have narrowed down my research question into “im studying Kyoto agreement because i want to find out about the economic and political reasons behind the US decision regarding this agreement in order to make teach people about what effect the green house emissions will have on the wellbeing of people in the future.”
I know that this need polishing but I am having a hard time putting finding the correct wording for it. I am planning to explain the reasons based on the articles and interview records i find on the topic. After, analyze those findings and come to conclusion about why would this be a logical decision for our government. I decided not to compare US emissions with other first world countries because that would complicate the point of the paper too much. Instead, I can go in depths into policies which is actually better for the public affairs paper.
What does everyone think about my question and next step?
Any interesting sources would be appreciated

Salome’s findings
Hi Everybody,
Like I’ve mentioned in the class my research question will be associated with “Why the united states does not sign the Kyoto agreement ?” at the beginning I looked for in depth explanation of this agreement and how it came about on the internet. I started here because Im hoping to get inspired from reading articles and coming up with more specific questions I can later answer in the paper. I found an academic research article on how rate of decline of greenhouse emissions must relate to rate of GDP growth. I will most likely involve this reference in my paper sine I wanted to analyze the political standpoint on this issue and the economy is very related to that. I have yet to read the entire paper but from skimming through it I can see very valuable facts for my question.
Kolstad, Charles D. “The simple analytics of greenhouse gas emission intensity reduction targets.” Energy Policy. 33.17 (2005): 2231-2236. Web. 8 Sep. 2012. <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301421504001466>.
Im making a note of the reference here. I also tried to look for politicians’ statements about the issue and found Bush’es statement explaining why it would be bad for the US economy to agree to such terms. This is the link to the web article. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8422343/ns/politics/t/bush-kyoto-treaty-would-have-hurt-economy/#.UE5bUWhAbR0
At the moment researching this topic seems like investigating a historical event. I look forward to finding new clues and tying them together .
