Hooding Ceremony FAQs

What is a Hooding Ceremony?
The Master in Arts Administration, Master in Corporate Communication, and Master of Science in I/O Psychology Hooding Ceremony is a special recognition ceremony for MA and MS degree candidates during which a current Baruch College graduate faculty member places the Master’s hood over the head of the graduate, signifying his or her success in completing the graduate program. The ceremony is similar to a graduation in that faculty and students are dressed in academic attire (regalia). The Hooding Ceremony is in addition to and does not replace the all-University Commencement at Barclays Center (or Madison Square Garden, Citi Center or the Jacob Javits Center.)

Who participates in the Hooding Ceremony?
The annual hooding ceremony honors graduate students in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, Office of Graduate Studies Programs who are receiving the MA or MS degree in the 2019–2020 academic year.
In order to participate in the hooding ceremony, you must complete your degree requirements in the 2019–2020 academic year: December 2019, June 2020, and/or August 2020. December 2019 graduates who complete MA Arts Administration Requirements https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/wsas/academics/ma-arts-administration/courses.html, MA in Corporate Communication Requirements https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/wsas/academics/corporate_communication/courses.html, and/or the MS in Industrial Organizational Psychology Requirements https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/wsas/academics/graduate_studies/Grad_MS_IOPsych.htm on or before May 15, 2020 are also eligible to participate.

How do I participate in the WSAS Office of Graduate Programs Hooding Ceremony?
Fill out an Intent to Participate Form, which is emailed to each eligible MA and MS student several weeks after they file for graduation. The Intent to Participate Form must be completed by April 14th, 2020 in order to take part in the hooding ceremony. Late submissions cannot be considered.

Who is invited to attend?
This ceremony is a special honor for Master of Arts in Arts Administration, Master of Arts in Corporate Communication as well as the Master of Science in Industrial Organizational Psychology degree recipients, who may invite a designated number of guests to attend in person. Students are eligible to reserve up to four tickets for guests to attend the annual hooding ceremony. (The student does not need a ticket.)

Graduate Student Check In
All Graduating students participating in the Hooding Ceremony are required to Check In to the Student Check In Area located in Room B14-290 VC, to line up for the procession.

Where and when is the ceremony?
The Master in Arts Administration 2020 Hooding Ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 at Baruch College’s Newman Vertical Campus located at 55 Lexington Ave, corner of East 24th Street, New York, NY 10010 in Room B14-220.

The Master of Science in I/O Psychology 2020 Hooding Ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 27th, 2020 at Baruch College’s Newman Vertical Campus located at 55 Lexington Ave, corner of East 24th Street, New York, NY 10010 in Room B14-220.

Are tickets required?
Yes. Tickets are required for guests including children. Tickets are not required for students. Children who will be sitting on a lap do not need a ticket, but children who will occupy a seat will require a ticket. Please email [email protected] for the 2020 Master’s Hooding Ceremony Guest tickets.

May children attend the ceremony?
Yes, children are welcome to attend the ceremony. Children who will occupy a seat require a ticket. Please bear in mind that the ceremony is 1.5 hours long (depending on the number of degree recipients).

Children are not permitted to join the processional, recessional, or a parent on stage when they receive a hood. Please be mindful and consider the experience of all the degree candidates and restrict children to the guest seating section.

How do I order regalia?

Once you receive your regalia please open the regalia while you are still at Baruch College and make sure that all parts and pieces are included (robe, hood, cap, tassel), that the zipper works, and that it fits.

Where can I pick up my regalia and University commencement tickets?

Where will my guests and I be able to park on the day of the ceremony?

When should student and faculty participants arrive at the ceremony?
Students and faculty who are participating in the hooding ceremony should plan to arrive at Baruch College by 5:15 pm. Students should proceed to the table marked “Student Check-In” on the 14th floor, room 290 of the NVC. The procession will start promptly at 6:00 pm.

When may my guests arrive for the Hooding Ceremony?
Guest seating will begin at 5:15 pm. We expect a full house for the Hooding Ceremony; therefore, we ask that your guests not save any empty seats in their row.

Will photographs be available?
Guests are permitted to take flash photographs and we respectfully request to not stand in the aisles at any time during the event.
