Analyzing Ivy by Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean is a popular R&B artist known for his implicit metaphors used in his songs. Usually, people listen to Frank on certain occasions, normally after something has occurred in their life or just in general. Heartbreak being one of the suitable reasons, the song Ivy incorporates the harsh reality of why two people decide to break up.

The song begins with a happy beat, something that can give energy. It is until the depressing lyrics begin that they start to contradict one another. The first few lyrics, “I thought that I was dreaming, When you said you loved me, The start of nothing.” Frank begins to relish his past relationship and compares it to what is happening now in his life, which is nothing that correlates to this previous relationship. The start of this agreement has led both sides to nothing since they are not together anymore. He continues the song with the statement, “I could hate you now. It is quite all right to hate me now. But we both know that deep down, the feeling still deep down is good.” What this relationship brought in the past was fighting and heartbreak, looking back now as they, both move on that there is no need to continue these mistakes and we should look back at this time in an effective way. It brought development to both. This sweet bitterness, the right person wrong time. Holding on to the past gives no growth but we can still look back in a positive light.

Frank decides to repeat these lyrics at least three times throughout the song. He wants listeners to understand that his love for this person was so big, but it was also hurting him along the way. Explicitly, people can see this as a random relationship that came out of nowhere and ended with hatred. It is not until you experience this pain to fully understand the lyrics and their implicitness. This person, knowing, they were not meant to have brought him so much attachment and care for this ex-partner till this day. He ends the song with “I been dreaming of you, dreaming of you” Frank says while screeching and sounding impaired. Which expresses an emotional outburst from missing that person. And he ends it with smashing some guitars in the distance, after being filled with rage and feelings of sentiment. Giving us the whole story of what this love is to Frank. Ivy tells a story of a failed relationship of two people who were in love but because of their own flaws, caused a failure in a relationship yet they do not regret one another.
