Film Review

The Black Panthers have had a significant impact on the development of various movements and continue to be very influential to POC who experience discrimination within American institutions. I decided to watch Why Revisiting the Black Panther revolution resonates today and discovered the value of documentaries that recognize influential groups of people who, in their day, were able to establish connections with a large number of individuals and overcome obstacles that kept them from exercising their rights and leading their lives. In the video, the director of The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, Stanley Nelson, explains that the Black Panthers were villainized during the 1960s-80s and later talks about how the FBI ended the group, which was showcased in his documentary. I concluded that the FBI framed them as reckless individuals, demonizing them while pitting them against one another. Their actions have left a long lasting effect and are the reason why the Black Panthers’ efforts continue to be misconstrued. It’s in some way a reflection of groups who today are demonized for the same efforts due to the spread of misinformation.

  1. It is crazy to me that the FBI can just spread misinformation and demonize an innocent group without facing any consequences. Even the current president of the United States continues to make false claims to demonize groups and he does not face any consequences. This is a common pattern seen across American history where those in power will always find a way to demonize those who are oppressed.
