This video provides a focus on the female leaders of the Black Panther Party. One of these leaders was Elaine Brown, who was the chairwoman of the BPP from 1974 to 1977. She ran twice for a position in the Oakland city council, where the party originated. She was also a writer for the Los Angeles radical paper Harambee, and an editor for the BPP’s paper. Another female revolutionary of the BPP was Kathlene Cleaver, who traveled the world while working in a foreign service, and was also heavily involved in the civil rights movement. She was the BPP’s national communications secretary, and was later appointed to the party’s central committee. The last female member mentioned in the video is Angela Davis, and while she is said to be one of the most recognized female members of the party, even though she eventually left the party due to the misogyny she experienced during her time there.
