Vintage vs Contemporary – Kiichiro Ishikawa
Vintage
Contemporary
Package I picked up is “Dr. Pepper Diet.” I believe that most of people’s image of this product is in white color; however, actually, it used be in blue color. I would say the concept of the design has not been changed too much from the old days. It uses almost the same logo that laying out from left to upper-right corner, but the background is in the blue color; I just think it does not work and it was a correct decision that they changed it to be in while color.
MoMA Packaging – Kiichiro Ishikawa
The package that caught my attention was BUILT ORIGAMI WINE TOTE. The design of the package is quite simple that only uses a tag with the brand name, product name and so on. This is just like the BUILT product that the product itself is stylish and they tend not to decorate much. The function and design of this product is unique as well. The part of its name, Origami, is the Japanese traditional art culture that to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Moreover, this product actually has a folding function that when you do not use this, you can fold and put it into you bag. I would say the designer of this product successfully merged the Japanese culture into contemporary design.

Unsuccessful and Successful Packages
Unsuccessful Packages
All the above are well thought-out designs; however, somewhat they are not attractive.
Especially, the last one “5. Sneaker Box.” It is understandable that the designer is trying to show an eco-friendly, but it is not a good idea for this kind of high-tech running sneaker. This cheap looking package leads customers to think that this sneaker also uses cheap materials. This package may work for shoes like Toms Sneakers.
Successful Packages
These are quite successful package designs. They are unique and each has a strong concept, yet each product gets favor of it because all the designs are eye-chatchy and attractive. I really like the Headset one. This is very simple and getting straight to the point! It uses the headset as the part of the design to portray the musical note.
