Recent Election Sparks Racial Tension:
As the new president elect Donald Trump begins his transition into the White House there have been numerous sparks of riots, racial slurs and fear among minorities from different racial backgrounds. A recent report of racist signs left outside a dorm room on the campus of Minnesota State University is currently under investigation. The note reads “Trump Hates the “N’ word” on a whiteboard. Although it has since been erased school officials have spoken to the student whose dorm it was left at, he or she does not feel threatened. The student government is working with the university to promote respect on the campus an email will also be sent over the next few days concerning the issue.
The day after Trump won the election pictures and footage emerged of furious protestors were seen burning flags, rioters set fire to rubbish and confronted Trump supporters in Oakland California. Police mentioned that at least 500 people swarmed the streets protesting around UCLA shouting **** Trump and “Not my president” however no immediate arrest were made behind this.
Per CNN there have been more than 300 cases of hateful harassment or intimidation in the US since the Election Day occurring in schools, businesses like Wal-Mart and on the streets. Some have even used Trump’s words a justification to carry out hurtful crimes. There have been episodes of racist or anti-Semitic pro- Trump graffiti along with threats on Muslims.
A man in Chicago was beaten by a bystander who yelled “You voted Trump!” and two men were arrested in Connecticut for allegedly assaulting a trump supporter.
President Elect Trump did respond by saying he was “so saddened” to hear about vitriol hurled by some of his supporters against minorities and “If it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: Stop it,” Trump said in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS’ “60 Minutes.”
My thoughts on all of this is simple, it makes no sense to hurt innocent people just because you don’t agree with their choice of preference for presidency and just because Trump is the president doesn’t give others the right to make racial slurs or intimate people of a different background or religion. At this point there is no going back so we might as well get used to the President and hope that he has a change of heart that benefits the greater America.
What do you think?
