33 Rules to be an artist

I found the article to be a good read. A lot of things in the reading were things I’ve heard before from time to time. I liked the part where it said something along the lines of everybody is capable of making art but not everyone deserves an audience. All the lessons had some comedic humor to it and I thought it was a little funny when reading it.

The article also reminded me that there are many mediums to explore like clay, fabric, sewing, wood work, and pottery. These are all things that I want to do more of and the article speaks on that as well. It says how we should develop our skills by repeating and constantly practicing sometimes the same things over and over again.

I also found the totem pole exercise interesting. The whole thing about different interpretations of artwork. It’s crazy that you can make something with your own meaning behind it and a stranger who doesn’t know anything about you or your art can interpret it very differently. It connects to other parts of the article touching on how you have no control over how others interpret your art and you don’t own the meaning of your art. If you put your art out there in the world for anybody to see and use and interpret it’s bound to spark different emotions in people. You can’t always be there to explain your work. You can provide a description but people’s attention are grabbed by the visual aspects and their initial interpretation may not always match the intended meaning.

There was a lot of humor throughout the article but I found it sad that a lot of artist do spend majority of there life working creating wonderful pieces of art and don’t make that much money. Some are lucky enough but the part about the 1% of the 1% made me a little sad for some artist.
