McLuhan The Medium is the MessageĀ

The part of the reading that really held my interest was the part about the beginning of print publishing and how it allowed for portable books which created more individualism and privacy and isolation from others. I guess that making things more accessible and portable means that people would not always have to go out in a public space to enjoy certain things. That is how the start of more individualism and privacy started I suppose but I did not think much of it that way. Majority of my thoughts were based upon modern days continual development of technology and how that really solidified how quick and fast individuals are able to consume media in private in their own individual space. It started with print books and advanced to technology. The updates, advancements and transition are major breakthroughs and can be incredible and as much individualism it allows for it also brings people together. It helps people find each other. You may not have anyone like you in your neighborhood but find someone who understands you across the country or world.

One part of the reading also says how print technology created the public and electric technology created the mass. From my understanding print technology brought the common public together that may have different points of views and opinions. Depending on geography people may have different points of views and although print technology was used to discuss and express these differences a person on one side of the world would maybe never find out about another point of view. There could only be so many inputs. However with electric technology word spread faster and you were able to discover things quicker and speak to someone on the whole other side of the world and be able to go back and forth with them in the comfort of your own home or your own city. I think it is absolutely amazing that you can utilize electric technology to communicate with people outside of your city and that there has been more individualism but sometimes it feels like it creates loneliness and allows us to be comfortable being by yourself and too independent.
