Jessica, I think you did an AMAZING job on this hybrid essay. It’s visually engaging, the essay you read under the images is very good and so well matched to the images, and the music keeps it dynamic and makes the entire work FLOW so nicely.It’s amazing how progression, transition, and flow can be accomplished differently–and more powerfully–when you have access to the visual and sound effects of video. It’s interesting to think about how these aspects of flow can be brought back into more traditional essays written on the page. That is, how can the transitions you have here as short musical interludes be reimagined as section breaks, section titles, etc?
I love the part at around 5.30 where you break into a man’s voice making an order in Spanish. And then move into a very VERY different mood with the harder beating music. It’s such a powerful transition into the conclusion, and contrasts perfectly with the “softer” message in your voice over.
I love this piece and will always remember it! Thank you for sending me the word file of the essay you read in the video.
I’d really like to have the video file for my records, so I don’t have to go to YouTube to access it. Something I might do, if I had the file and with your permission, would be to include your video–or parts of it–in presentations I give on creativity in student writing, and how an assignment like the hybrid essay is a useful teaching and learning exercise.
Would you mind trying to send the actual video file to me?
