Extra Credit: How to replace your broken iPhone screen with a new one
December 17, 2013
There are many things i have never tried making before. Whether it would be making, creating, fixing, renovating something, i would chose to change the cracked screen on my iPhone. It is a risky process due to the potential of actually destroying my phone, but it is a process i am willing to go through.
The steps to change the screen on the iPhone are:
1) You need to buy the replacement glass screen from any website on line that sell them. Make sure you don’t buy a screen that is cheap. The screen will break within the first month or so because of the fragile glass the manufacturer uses.
2) Once your Screen is in, prepare all the tools you need to use for the procedure of changing your screen. This includes,
- The replacement glass you bought
- A #00 Phillips screwdriver
- A razor blade, or some sort of scraping tool
- Rubbing alcohol
- Q-tips
- A hair dryer or heat gun ( you can buy a cheap one on amazon or Ebay)
- Double-sided tape
- Scissors
- Superglue
3) Before you start, back up your phone by connecting it to your computer and press sync!
4) Look towards the bottom of your iPhone and locate the two screws on either side of the USB connector and unscrew them using the phillips screw driver #00
5) Remove the screen using a razor blade or a scraping tool carefuly.
6) Look for flaps in the top right holding of the screen and phone together. Carefully lift those flaps with the blade or scraping tool.
7) Look for a third sticker under the #2 flap and lift the black “clamp” to release the #3 connection.
8) Once the clamp is lifted, the screen will be free from the rest of the iPhone, so just pull it out.
9) Remove 6 more screws; 5 screws on the side rails, 3 on the side with the flaps, and 2 on the other side. The last screw is in the top right.
10) Separate the LCD using a blade or wedging tool. This will free the LCD from the metal frame.
11) Clean the metal farm from the broken glass carefully without cutting yourself. Make sure you remove every last piece of glass using a scraping tool so the new screen fits snug.
12) Prepare your new screen and add glue or double-sided tape around the edges so the screen fits snug.
13) Reassemble your iPhone by Putting the LCD and glass back together.
14) Put the 6 screw back that you removed earlier.
15) Slide the #3 cable back into the open clamp and then close it.
16) Put the #2 and #1 cables back on by pressing them onto the connector. This should be a simple step.
17) Put the screen back onto the by inserting the top first. Then the side with the connects and finally place the bottom in. Avoid using force. The Screen and LCD should fit nice and snug.
18) Finally put the last 2 screws we removed earlier in step #4 and screw them back in.
19) Your iPhone is set and ready to go!
This should be an interesting procedure! I do have some experience with taking things apart and putting them back together in one piece. This procedure should not be that hard to figure out as long as you follow the steps properly and be fragile with the pieces you are handling. I am going to attempt to fix my broken iPhone screen using the steps i listed and hopefully everything goes right as planned.
Get a 3D printer!
December 17, 2013
Over the course of time taking 3D printing at Baruch College, i must say, go take a 3D printing class! It was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had as a student taking a class. It was basically taking a art class and business class all in one! It was great because you worked with your own individual group and the plan was to come out with a business innovation that had to be 3D printed. Overall my team worked very hard to come out with our Coffee project, the Solar Cup. Xueshi did the designing of our Cup, Mariama took over the Business aspect of project, and i worked on both the design and mechanical aspects of the Solar Cup. Everything didn’t go as expected because the lid of the cup printed out to big and the cup didn’t print properly. On the other hand, the solar powered heating aspect of the cup was a success! Thanks to my knowledge in physics and some experience in engineering i was able to create an aluminum conductor as a heating source from solar energy. From designing the cup on Sketch Up to 3D printing the final design, my insight on design brought out the imaginative side i never i was capable of attaining. The class also enlightened me in the business aspect of putting my Solar Cup on the market because it was such a great idea. The solar Cup would be the perfect tool for campers to warm up their drink instead of using a heat source from a camp fire. It could also reduce the amount of forest fires if you think about it. Anyhow if i were to go back to the beginning of when this class started, i wouldn’t have given myself any advice. Successfully, we took the right steps as a group to develop our idea into physical form. Besides some measurement errors of the lid size and faulty printing from the MakerBot printer, i think we did a great job in terms of creating a prototype. As posted in my early blogs and as a biological science major i see my self as one of the first Bio Engineers developing Bio Printed Organs in the near future. As for now, I have applied to several Bio Printing facilities and hope to be a part of the growing medicine industry.
I am a Maker.
December 17, 2013
If i am an expert in anything it would be applying my knowledge of Science to better the world. I can talk to you all day about the human body and how it works, or the physics behind the mechanical aspect of the solar cup i made for my coffee project. Whether its Biological sciences, physics, or even chemistry, my true expertise lies within making, inventing, and creating. My fundamental knowledge of Science is the key to me being a maker. I want to better the world through my innovations that could help millions of people and make their lives easier. As you all know from my previous posts, i am a Pre-med student. I don’t want to be a doctor that can impact and better the life of a few patients. I want to impact the world and I’m sure I’m not the only person that wants too as well. Imagination is the key. Once that light bulb in your head turns on, don’t wait wait until you lose that brilliant thought! As for myself, i don’t want to be the millionth scientist trying to find a cure for cancer because it will be found eventually. The question is what is the next step? After taking a 3D printing class at Baruch college, i was enlightened. Like I’ve mentioned in my previous blogs, Bioprinting will revolutionize the world. Bio Printed Organs will be so widely available in the near future that swapping damaged organs for new ones will be practical. It would be like swapping an old chevy motor that has 200,000 miles on it with a brand new one. I couldn’t imagine how difficult it would be to create perfect working Bio printed organs when i struggled building my solar cup. It took 36 hours to print the cup , 14 hours to print the lid, and about 20 hours to make the solar powered heating aspect of the cup to work. The point is putting an idea into physical form is not as easy as it sounds. Even though it took over three days of constructing the solar up, i managed to make it work. Im ready for something more challenging, to construct perfect working Bio printed organs. I hope someday i can give the opportunity for someone with a failing organ to live an extra day, if not another decade or two. Since Bio printing is a working progress, here is the question that needs to be answered: What happens when the world becomes over populated because of rejuvenated patients with new organs? Will there be a deficit of resources due to the influx of people living on earth at this time? These are all factors that need to be considered. What state will the world be in when mankind acquires this fountain of youth? Surely this advancement in technology will be a giant leap for man kind in the short term but who knows what consequences it will hold for the future.
Im almost there!

Organovo or Biogen?
December 9, 2013
Hello to all my Bloggers! I managed to contact Medical Research companies Organovo and Biogen since i am interested in getting an internship with them. Im planning on taking a tour in their facility to see what environment i will be working in if i get the job of course. Organovo is in San Diego, California and Biogen Pharmaceuticals is based in North Carolina so if i get a tour of either facility, it will probably be Biogen (since it is closer to me). I didn’t mention Biogen earlier but it is a big pharmaceutical company, much larger than Organovo. Unlike Organovo, Biogen Pharmaceuticals has different facilities for different areas in the medical research field such as developing drugs for Multiple Scelrosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Organovo focuses strictly on BioPrinting Organs. Hopefully during winter break i can take a flight to San Diego so i can check out Organovo. Im definitely going for swim while I’m out there.
When your heart is broken, just print another one!
December 2, 2013
Hey Everyone! So for all of you who read the title of my post, I’m just kidding but at the same time I’m not. If you’re heart is broken because a loved one left you or if you just got dumped, I’m sorry to burst your bubble but a new heart won’t help you in those hard emotional times. On the other hand if your heart is “broken” in terms of heart issues such as heart disease, enlarged hearts, atherosclerosis, and other life threatening diseases, don’t give up just yet. If you haven’t heard, Bio engineers like Dr. Stuart K. Williams, “a scientific director of the newly established Cardiovascular Innovation Institute, has been focused on medical devices, regenerative medicine and infection control.” Apparently the heart is one of the easiest organs to be 3D printed and in about a decade it will be on the market for patients with heart problems. Just imagine how many lives will be saved? Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United states with over 800,000 deaths per year! Thats nearly 2,200 people per day that die because they have a bad heart. Of course heart attacks and strokes are unexpected and can occur at any random moments. Take a moment and think about it. With the manufacturing of 3D printed hearts widely available for patients with cardiovascular disease, the rate of death caused by this disease will be so low the disease itself will probably be forgotten in a century.
