Get a 3D printer!
December 17, 2013
Over the course of time taking 3D printing at Baruch College, i must say, go take a 3D printing class! It was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had as a student taking a class. It was basically taking a art class and business class all in one! It was great because you worked with your own individual group and the plan was to come out with a business innovation that had to be 3D printed. Overall my team worked very hard to come out with our Coffee project, the Solar Cup. Xueshi did the designing of our Cup, Mariama took over the Business aspect of project, and i worked on both the design and mechanical aspects of the Solar Cup. Everything didn’t go as expected because the lid of the cup printed out to big and the cup didn’t print properly. On the other hand, the solar powered heating aspect of the cup was a success! Thanks to my knowledge in physics and some experience in engineering i was able to create an aluminum conductor as a heating source from solar energy. From designing the cup on Sketch Up to 3D printing the final design, my insight on design brought out the imaginative side i never i was capable of attaining. The class also enlightened me in the business aspect of putting my Solar Cup on the market because it was such a great idea. The solar Cup would be the perfect tool for campers to warm up their drink instead of using a heat source from a camp fire. It could also reduce the amount of forest fires if you think about it. Anyhow if i were to go back to the beginning of when this class started, i wouldn’t have given myself any advice. Successfully, we took the right steps as a group to develop our idea into physical form. Besides some measurement errors of the lid size and faulty printing from the MakerBot printer, i think we did a great job in terms of creating a prototype. As posted in my early blogs and as a biological science major i see my self as one of the first Bio Engineers developing Bio Printed Organs in the near future. As for now, I have applied to several Bio Printing facilities and hope to be a part of the growing medicine industry.
