Here is a video commentary on Song of Myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUrlJZJsv1w. This video discusses stanza 16 of Song of Myself by Walt Whitman. The author of this video suggests that stanza 16 has one, very important main idea. The main idea presented in this stanza is unity. Walt Whitman’s main goal in this stanza is to unify all types of people through his words. This means that no matter who you are, you should come together and unite with the people around you. This ultimately can bring together the rich and the poor and/ or the big and the old. Moreover, Walt Whitman’s goal is to practice the equality of all people across the United States of America. This is why Walt Whitman uses a specific diction in the 16th stanza. He delebirtraly speaks softly because he is trying to speak to all types of people- the smart and stupid people. If he speaks in a very official tone, using high vocabulary, then he is only talking to smart people. Therefore, he used simple terminology so that he can get his point across to all types of people. He is trying to relay the message of brotherhood to his readers and spread that concept across America. To Walt whitman, no one person is greater than the other, even of they are of a greater monetary value. Everyone is considered equal in his eyes, and therefore, should be treated accordingly. No one should have more favorable things than the other. He wants everyone to feel equal and perceive everyone else around them on the same scale as them as well. This is a very difficult concept to teach to people, especially because this is not the way the world operates. Once the citizens act a certain way towards others, it is very hard for them to undo their ways.
