The New Years Sacrafice

In the great work, “The New Year Sacrifice,” by Lu Xun’s, the author demonstrates the oppression women felt during this time period. This is depicted with XiangLin’s Wife. she  is a typical and traditional Chinese woman. She is good hearted and she works very hard. She is also extremely loyal to her husband. However, she is constantly being oppressed and challenged by the people and environment around her. An example of the oppression is demonstrated  After XiangLin’s Wife’s first husband died. After this death, her mother-in-law forces her to remarry in order to arrange the marriage of her brother-in-law. However, she prefers to die instead of marrying another man because of how loyal she is to her original husband. According to chinese tradition, the women are supposed to remain loyal to their husbands, no matter how difficult the circumstances become, which is her ultimate goal. Unfortunately, this is not really an option. She has no freedom because of everyone forcing her to act one way or another. Moreover, people don’t sympathize or care for her. If anything, they continue to antagnozie and command her.  Eventually, this lead to XiangLin’s Wife’s death.Imagine feeling like you could not live your life the way you were told or brought up to live it. Instead, you are being pushed around by the people around you. If this were me, I would not be able to last a day. I have my own values that I live up to and if anyone were to ever take my value or tradition away, I don’t think I would be able to last. It is very hard to simply say yes to everyone and their rules, especially when you have your own agenda in life. No one is interested in answering or living according to another person. That is not a life. That is considered to be suffering and severe pain.
