Folktales

In Sweden where I am from, most of our folktales are about trolls or female creatures. I remember when I was a child my grandmother always used to tell the story of the mountain troll that lived by the Viking rune stones. The story goes that the troll lived there to protect the treasures left by the Vikings and that if anyone tried to climb the mountain the troll would come out and eat you. Of course this story scared me and my brother to death.

I understand that mostly the story was to protect us from hurting ourselves when we walked around in the woods. Though as we got older me, my brother and our cousins always played on the mountain, but in the back of our minds we always remembered that story of the mountain troll.

Reaction to Ithkuil

I found it very interesting that someone would try to create a language that is so pure and without all the vagueness that is in the English language. To me it seems like a challenge that could not be completed. I came to realize through reading the article about the flaws that the English language and all the confusion it can cause people. In my personal life, my parents who’s first language is not English sometimes find speaking English can be extremely difficult because so many words sound the same and have similar meanings. The language is presented as a cross between an a priori philosophical and a logical language. It also strives to minimize the ambiguities and semantic vagueness found in natural human languages. It is amazing how the Internet was able to create a small community of language enthusiasts who began to recognize what Quijada, a civil servant without an advanced degree, had accomplished. I find it interesting that people began to catch on and really appreciate his work. Ithkuil, one Web site declared, “is a monument to human ingenuity and design.” It maybe the most complete realization of a quixotic dream that has entranced philosophers for centuries: the creation of a more perfect language.” On the website there is so much detail on how the language is used and how to construct different sentences because there is so much depth in his language.

Research Paper Topic

For my final research paper I would like to discuss how religion can affect child development.  I wasn’t raised strictly into a religion and I believe as a result I am now very open, not just in regards to religion, but to almost everything.  I really want to see if there are any hardcore differences in the way we develop depending on our religious environment.  Hopefully I can make this more specific, maybe check for certain traits related to religious homes and traits related to non religious homes.  The affect of religion, if not solely on child development, is just something I have always been interested in so I really want to try and do something with it.

Reactions to Ithkuil

After reading the New York Times article about this invented language called Ithkuil, I have  mixed opinions.  Quijada states that his intention was to create a language that was more efficient and precise, as well as completely unambiguous, as opposed to the natural languages that are already in existence.  There are some cases where a person wants to be as direct as possible but then there are also those where a person doesn’t want to be easily understood.  A language like Ithkuil would force our hands, in a manner of speaking, in that there would be no choice in the matter, just like in Spanish and French there is very little choice in distinguishing the gender of a person you might be speaking about.  I also think our culture would be lacking when it comes to literature.  The ability to manipulate words, give double and sometimes triple meanings, or simply using sarcasm or irony are qualities we commend in our writers.  I can only imagine how dull a poem might be if the poet was forced to lay out explicitly what he or she meant.  On the other hand, I definitely can see the language’s usefulness when it comes to politics, which is always filled with ambiguous statements and misdirection. I would love it if politicians had no choice but to say what they actually meant. Overall though, I would say I agree with Lackoff  when he says Ithkuil is merely a piece of art as opposed to a functional language.  I can admire Ithkuil and the amount of work and creativity Quijada put into it, just as I can admire other made up languages like Klingon, but I could never really take it seriously enough to believe it was capable of functioning universally.

Final Research Project Topic

It has been very difficult for me to pick a final research project topic, but I want to talk about immigration to the United State by people from El Salvador. I am interested in this topic because my parents immigrated to the United States during the 1980s. I would like to know more about why people immigrated during that time period and why people are leaving El Salvador to come to the United States now. I would also be very interesting to know how these people keep their culture alive and preserve it in their children. This topic is somewhat vague, but hopefully as I do more research I will be able to have a better focal point.

My IAT Experience

I decided to take the IAT today. I chose to do the skin color experiment where it shows whether you have a preference for people with light skin as opposed to people with dark skin.  My results showed that I have an automatic preference for light skin rather than dark skin. This was based on the fact that I responded quicker with association good words when it was paired with light skin faces.  I honestly don’t agree with the results.  When I first took took the exercise it was harder for me to remember which side of the screen was for good and which for bad, and that happened when the word good was paired with dark skin faces.  In the second part of the exercise i had gotten the hang of it, and since all they did was switch sides, it was a lot easier for me to remember.  I know this because I was consciously aware of it while it was happening lol.  All in all, it is an interesting exercise. I would take the other tests just to come up with more reasons why it isn’t accurate lol.

Restaurant..

When I moved to Jamaica Estates four years ago, I came across a restaurant name Annam Brahma. It’s an vegetarian restaurant mainly with indian dishes. This restaurant is run by Sri Chinmoy followers and all of the followers are americans which was interesting because they make some delicious indian food.  At first, I was scared to go in that restaurant but one day my sisters and I took my mother to that restaurant for Mother’s Day and we loved it. It looked like an actual restaurant from inside and out nothing crazy or anything and people were so nice and polite. As we all know cults are known for being dangerous but as  years went by and we started going to that restaraunt more often because of the walking distance that scary feeling I felt went away. I just wanted to bring this restaurant to the class attention, I know noone is going to travel all the way out to queens just to eat as we do in the city. But if any of you are in the area, you should definitly try this amazing place with variety of vegetarian food.

final research paper topic

For my final research project, I am planning to do research on globalization and languages which we have been discussing in the class throughout the semester. In this paper, I will be discussing the effects of globalization on language. The increase of globalization has both positive and negative effects on language.

Dothraki Language

Being that tonight is the  season premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones, I thought I would share some information that I read on the internet. As one of my favorite shows that I look forward to watching,  I particularly enjoy the language of  Dothraki that is used in Essos as opposed to the English that is spoken in Westeros.

Thee language which professor has mentioned in our discussions a few times is actually quite a rich language, and not some made up words that sound alike.HBO hired expert language creator David J. Peterson from the Language Creation Society to develop the Dothraki language – “possessing its own unique sound, extensive vocabulary of more than 1,800 words and complex grammatical structure” – to be used in the series.

As of 21 September 2011, there were 3,163 created words in the lexicon, though far from all words are known to the public. However, there is a growing community of Dothraki language fans, with websites like “Learn Dothraki” offering information on the state of the language. Dothraki is now heard by more people each week than Yiddish, Navajo, Inuit, Basque, and Welsh combined!

IAT

I did the IAT test 2 days ago and I found it interesting how the test is structure. At first it lets you know which words are associated with what category, religion was blue so whatever word that were associated with religion was blue and good was yellow, whatever words were yellow, they associated with good. I took the religion IAT because I wanted to know what it was going to show at the end of the result because in my opinion, I think every religion says the same thing except in a different way. I believe in every religion, it just depends on how people interpret it everyone has there on point of view. The result of my IAT was just i expected it to be, all of the religion were in the middle..1. buddhism 2. hinduism 3. christianity 4. islam. I think all these religions were in the middle because I didn’t make that many mistake. The test was structure to see if a person makes rational decision when they have to make it in the fast situation. I found it interesting that at first when I took my time I didnt make any mistakes and as soon as it asked you have to do it fast I made few mistakes because it gave you everything that were associted with that religion and good and then all of the sudden it gave you words that weren’t associated with good or that religion. Once you started to press on “i” again and again when you saw the words that weren’t asscoaited with good or that religion you would still press on “i” even when you meant to press on “e” and get that wrong, and that’s what happen to me.
