Bangladesh Factory Collapse 2013

Bangladesh is one of the developing countries in the world.  The population of Bangladesh is growing up dramatically. There is not enough opportunity to get a decent job for everyone. Therefore, many educated people are finding getting a good job challenging. Since the garment industry is on demand and jobs are available in this industry many teenage are interested in starting up their carriers in this field.  To survive their life they began to work for a low salary.  The owners of the garment industry earned of profits and they deprive their employees from many opportunities.

Factory collapse is not something new or top news in Bangladesh. Every year more than 2-3 garment building collapse or are affected by unexpected fire.  Many employees have to die because of these collapses and  fires.

The biggest collapse in the history of garment industry occurred On Wednesday, April 24 at 9 a.m. The building is an eight-story building name Rana Plaza at Saver, Dhaka. A recent survey indicates that more than 3,500 garment workers were inside. Over 1200 garment workers have been confirmed dead and more than hundreds of workers have been hospitalized.

Most of the workers already knew that the building condition was dangerous. On Tuesday, April 23, the day before the collapse, huge cracks had appeared in the building. The government building inspector has been visited on the building and ordered it evacuated right way. The owner of building didn’t pay attention to the inspector.  He rather announced that (Wednesday, April 24) individuals would not be paid for the month unless they returned to work. The employees we forced to work and probably few hours after of his announcement the building collapsed.

A recent report indicated that, the owners of the factories have been arrested along with the owner of the Rana Plaza building. Bangladesh High Court has frozen the bank accounts and prohibited them from leaveing the country. They also prohibited any activating in the factory and the building.

  1. This blog hits close to home since I’m also from Bangladesh. It’s truly a sad state of affairs in Bangladesh, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and standards and regulations are almost non-existent. The current regime has no clue how to run a country safely and one can only hope it can get better.
