California’s Diaspora

My research focuses on the ethnic databases. I found several articles in Proquest’s Ethnic NewsWatch, which point out the theaters in which the Armenian community in Little Armenia gathers. The other source I found was a thesis on subethnicity. The paper also summarizes the statistical presence of Armenians in the area, as well as the reasons behind the large Armenian immigration into California.

St. Garabad Armenian Church – I found this church described as the center of Little Armenia in serveral articles. Religion is a big part of Armenian culture, so this church seemed important.

Fountain Theatre – This theatre isn’t exclusively Armenian, but commonly hosts ethnic shows for the ethnic community. It is a local hot spot for this neighborhood.

Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School – This school is located right across the street from the church. It introduced Armenian culture to students and served as a center similar to the church.

Armenian Cultural Foundation – This foundation is the backbone of the community, it organizes gatherings and promotes the local events.

Druzhba Armenian Deli – This deli is one of many Armenian small businesses in the area. The thesis on Armenians in Los Angeles showed how a large number were owners of small businesses.
