HW #3

  1. One great example of typeface mixing.
  2. One great or horrible (your choice) or either kerning or tracking.
  3. One great or horrible example (your choice) of line spacing (leading).
  4. And one great example of marking paragraphs.

Example of Typeface Mixing

This example of typeface mixing is remarkable because it uses a modern abstract font with a thin, sans serif font.

Great Tracking/Kerning

Simple, 45 degree font rotation with the arrow in the top right. Light brush overlay on the font gives it a rough look.

The Leading is represented by each plank of wood.

Marking Paragraphs

The Skis are used as if they are line breaks between the title and the text

HW 2

Monster fonts are considered a technological breakthrough in the advancement of modern typefaces. Monster fonts break the code of traditional typefaces and also leaves a plethora of design independence for the typesetter. Design programs have made it easier for typesetters to design an abstract style font and subsequently develop a concept unlike any other.

The monster font family is made up of many fonts varying in style, design and concept. Within this style, there are no specific guidelines that necessarily need to be followed          per se. Traditional typefaces tend to have a sense of fluidity and easy readability. This is where monster font concepts vary immensely. A monster font can be made up of abstract designs or even traditional typefaces with a modern twist. This style of font gives the designer the opportunity to develop font consisting of a certain identity which would pertain to a specific project or concept.

HW#1

I am not an avid reader of literature but this documentary does make me wonder what life would be like without bound books. We live in a world where technology has taken a grasp on making everyday life simpler for everyone.  The new e-reader technology makes it easier for people who lead very busy lives to purchase and download books at the click of a mouse. Because of this, digital copies of literature have altered the state of a bound book; leaving it to be text on a back-lit screen. This in a sense takes away the essence of what printed literature is all about.

Everything from the cover pages to the text pages give the book a “personality” that e-readers are unable to portray. The design and the texture of the cover pages give it a unique quality that sets it apart from all of the other books on the bookshelf.  As portrayed in the film, the sense of smell is now disregarded with books that are used on e-readers. It isn’t imperative to have the ability to smell the literature, but it takes away from the experience of picking up a bound book and enlightening yourself with knowledge.

I feel that it is safe to say local bookstores should be more worried about wholesale book sellers such as Barnes & Noble before having to worry about e-readers.
