I particularly like that everything is very colorful, vibrant, insinuating happiness and good mood. The typography is pretty simple which is easy on the eyes and inviting. The images of all the foods look delicious and make me hungry. I might even experiment with a few of her recipes after seeing a cover like this one for example.

This one seems very simple with a lot of white in the background and a small photo of herself in the corner allowing us to focus in on this very strong image of a tasty looking dessert. Typefaces used are nice, again simple, and the image is very inviting with a little thing at the bottom stating the amount of recipes which is smart. The designer did a good job with this.

Martha Stewart’s design style is clean and minimalistic. Her designs for her magazine and cookbooks are very distinctive. It highlights the photography of the food. For example the design for her magazine, it’s clean and simple and not busy at all. This defines all of Martha Stewart’s other design style for her magazine and cookbooks. I personally think her design highlights the photography and I really like her design style.

I took one from her Living Cook Book and the other from her website. They both have the same thing going on. Her style is very defined. You can tell this is “Martha Stewart” from a mile away. Light very defined colors are used. Her styles are simple and elegant. She uses sans-serif typeface to push the idea of simplicity. She’s doing a lot by not doing much. The images are pretty large and her text is pretty small. There’s always a bunch of space even though she can have larger type! It works for her.

Martha Stewards design style is simple, and classic. Neither of these designs are really edgy, but they use very classic layouts. All the photos are overhead shots, for consistency and usability. The first design is wonderful. I really like how the text interacts with tomato’s around it.

Books are wonderful things, but they are not the only way to read. Reading on an IPad or kindle is wonderful. The biggest issue with reading on a device is their poor optimizations. They try to fake being books, as seen with the IPad’s “page turn”. We need to make books specifically for devices in mind, to best optimize screen space. The movie reminds you how charming books are, but reading on a device can be just as charming.

Martha Stewart’s Everyday Living April 2012 edition portrays an effective layout of pictures and type throughout the cover.  The warm and cool colors of the eggs bring the sense of Easter during the springtime.  The arrangements of the eggs are strategically placed so that they evenly fill the background without having a messy appearance.  The positioning of the various sanserif and serif characters doesn’t clutter the cover, and are clean and legible.

Caviar, presented elegantly.  What better way to showcase the use of caviar than to fill an entire page of a magazine with a high quality photograph?  On the other side of the photo, the leading of the bodies of text are spaced apart accordingly to promote legibility.  In addition, the paragraphs are all fully justified to contribute to the overall layout’s simplicity.  Finally, a multi-color large display size “Caviar” can be seen blended onto the first line of text for aesthetics.

  1. One great example of typeface mixing.
  2. One great or horrible (your choice) or either kerning or tracking.
  3. One great or horrible example (your choice) of line spacing (leading).
  4. And one great example of marking paragraphs.

Example of Typeface Mixing

This example of typeface mixing is remarkable because it uses a modern abstract font with a thin, sans serif font.

Great Tracking/Kerning

Simple, 45 degree font rotation with the arrow in the top right. Light brush overlay on the font gives it a rough look.

The Leading is represented by each plank of wood.

Marking Paragraphs

The Skis are used as if they are line breaks between the title and the text

Martha Stewart’s design style is very colorful and bright. The pictures that she uses for her magazine are very fun and they seem to be fit for family events, such as a barbecue, or family activities, such as pumpkin carving. The typefaces are very bold san serifs for the titles, similar to Franklin Gothic  , and for the subheadings, the text is slim and are serifs. The layouts consist of a large, colorful picture, and a text to the side of the picture.
