Essay 1, due March 6

PDF handout

See the exhibit Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary at the Museum of Art & Design. For directions, see http://madmuseum.org. Admission is $12 with your student ID, and is “pay-what-you-wish” on Thursdays from 6-9pm.

This exhibition has virtually nothing to do with animation (directly). Enjoy it anyway.

Many of the artists in the exhibition use repetition and accumulation as design strategies for creating their artwork. They also use ordinary objects as the basic material in their work. Based on the exhibit, write a 500-word essay (approx. 2 pages, double-spaced) that answers the following question: What is the relationship between the part and the whole?

State your answer clearly in the introduction to the essay. Use the body of your essay to support your answer with specific examples from the exhibition. Use your own words and express your own ideas. If you do paraphrase or quote a text, you must credit your source. As stated in the course guide, I will not tolerate plagiarism or academic dishonesty of any kind, and breaches of academic integrity will result in a failing grade for the assignment and potentially failure for the entire course. Correct English grammar and syntax are essential components of any successful essay.

Turn in a printed copy of your essay (double-spaced please) at the beginning of class on March 6. By the same date, post the text of your essay to the blog using the “Second Lives” category. Late work is marked down one full letter grade for each week or portion of a week that it is overdue.

If you have trouble writing there are many resources at Baruch to help you, including the Writing Center in VC8-185. Find out more and make an appointment to meet with a tutor at www.baruch.cuny.edu/writingcenter.
