Second Lives Essay

What is the relationship between the part and the whole?

The relationship between the part and the whole is combined together. In the Museum of Art and Design there was a combination of simple part. And those simple parts where put together to form a whole. The whole exhibit Second Live remixing the ordinary consisted of simple objects people use in every day life. Artists used small objects like bottle caps, glass, quarter, plastic glove, clothing labels, and books to create a bigger picture.

An artist named Teresa Agnew created the “Portrait of textile work” in 2005 by combining small objects. Agnew used clothing labels, treads, and fabrics backing which all are simple objects that people use every day. Agnew took all of those objects to create a bigger picture with meaning. The portrait was sewed together using black and white text to form a women working on a sewing machine. All of the clothing labels by themselves would not have the same meaning as it does together. What I found interesting was the fact that she used clothing labels, treads and fabrics which this relates to her whole consisted of portrait of a women sewing.

Another artist Tomiko Kawata created “Black Orpheus Fabricated” was made by stainless steel pins to form an Orpheus. I image that 1,000 pins were used to create the black Orpheus. Each pin connected to another pin to create a necklace called Orpheus. The name Orpheus is a Greek name from the son of the Apollo.

There were more exhibits like the pyramid made of spoons raped with rubber bans. There was also a table made up of quarter. There was also a chandelier hanging from the ceiling made up of glasses. This exhibit really opened my eye towards the art that can be made by ordinary things. I used to think that art and design only consisted of drawing and designs by computer or by hand. But now I see that ordinary things can be used to represent art work as well.

There were many art works that I liked but the ones that caught my eye were the “Portrait of Textile” and “The Mona Lisa backwards”. I found it amazing how the artists created that portrait. I thought that it was very creative to build the portrait backwards and use the crystal ball to see the portrait right side up. When you first see the portrait you don’t notice any thing specific. As people look at the crystal ball the ball allows people to see the real image. Which is amazing if I say so my self.

The exhibit Second Live remixing the ordinary was a real eye opener towards the real work of art. Each art work has its own simple meaning that created a bigger picture. Who knew that art work like that really existed. I really liked the exhibit of Second Live remixing the ordinary because it was something that I never saw before. I think that Second Live, stands for giving life to ordinary things that people really does not believe has meaning that what makes the exhibit so interesting.
