Weekly blogging ends; Final project notes

Weekly blogging #10 was your last weekly blog homework – there is no blogging assignment this week.

I am looking forward to seeing your final projects on Friday. The final presentation period runs from 1pm-3pm. Arrive on time and prepared to show your work. In addition to presenting your work to the class, you will need to turn in your final project as both FLA and SWF files.

Post your final projects to the blog under the “Project 4 – Final Project” category. (If you are using external files then you will not be able to post your own work successfully; be sure to bring your files and all external assets with you to the final).

slide show comments

My slide show was the one that showed hope. In order to obtain the the photos, I send out a facebook message to my friends and asked them to send in images that they believed showed a hope for hard times. Few replied, but I was able to make a small slide show out of the images received. I am pretty satisfied at the way the slide show turned out. I wanted it to be simple and kind of stylish at the same time. The complicated slideshows frustrated me in the past, so I decided a simple one would be best, without the long intro that everyone would have to see every time they came back to see it. They only thing that i would’ve liked to do was a sliding thumbnail gallery instead of the lines of photos. I believe it would’ve given the slideshow more control in terms of design.

I liked the slideshow that had the sliding thumbnail gallery in the roll of film, although it was a bit fast and hard to control. With that, I also enjoyed the transitions of the slideshow showing the road to school by a girl and the various things she would see. The layout was unique and the control was pretty intuitive and again unique.

Is anime an artform?

In order to effectively answer this question, we would need to define the term “art form” and build from there. Looking at dictionaries, there are multiple definitions of the term art, and in this case, I would like to define the art form as a creative expression that tangibly or intangibly gives us a means to understand/see/hear, one’s own or the greater societies, religious/cultural/personal beliefs and or values.

I decided to make my slideshow Twilight themed because I am a huge fan of the series. Here, I created a slideshow that takes you through the story of Twilight in 10 frames. I think the graphics I created for the slideshow is what worked best. I decided to give it a gothic or dark theme to go with the overall theme of the story pertaining to vampires. In retrospect I think I could have given it a better introduction. I give it a small animation in the beginning (images and text sliding into frame) but I think I could have done something a little more creative with it.

Overall I accomplished my goal for the slideshow. I wanted to give everyone a little taste of something I enjoy in a beautiful way and I think that came across.

Just to note again: the music doesn’t play here because I linked it externally. By linking externally, the music isn’t compressed and sounds better than putting it in the .fla library.

Another person’s slideshow that I did enjoy was Liat’s ‘Reflections in Puddles’. The animations used were very creative and goes along well with the theme of puddles and raining. The intro music also fits the overall theme. I also really like the way you can navigate through the pictures and the actionscript behind it. The transitions used to go from picture to picture are professional and eye catching. Overall a lovely slideshow!

Is Anime A Serious Art Form?

Art is universally described as a subjective topic. What might be beautiful and artistic to some may mean the complete opposite to another. One cannot judge another person on such views because everyone is different in their own right. Before visiting the exhibit KRAZY! The Delirious World of Anime, Manga, and Video Games I did not think much of anime let alone think of anime as a serious art form. When I think of anime, I think of childhood “fads” such as Pokemon or Sailor Moon, both of which were huge and iconic figures while we were growing up. It is safe to say that I am a little biased when it comes to anime because I grew up with the notion that anime can be a little childish. This is probably one of the reasons why I never took to it as a teenager and even now as a young adult. Upon entering the exhibit I will admit of being very skeptical about what I was going to see. However, I kept an open mind, and after exiting I think my preconceived notions of anime have changed and therefore think of anime as a true art form. Continue reading

Manga: A Serious Art Form?

What is considered a serious art form?  Perhaps it is artwork that has a general standard of what the subject matter should be and the style in which it should be presented.  An example of a serious art form may be mandalas because they are supposed to reflect spirituality, as well as have patterns and geometric shapes.  However, anime, which is Japanese animation, and manga, which are Japanese comics, do not appear to have “rules” about what they should look like.  The exhibit Krazy!: The Delirious World of Anime + Manga + Video Games at the Japan Society showcases a wide variety of anime and manga genres and styles.  The Japan Society’s collection of manga is more diverse than that of anime though.  The manga displayed there feature human characters and even machines as the main characters, whereas the anime there only has people in it.  Both manga and anime use many art styles, but manga appears to combine more styles than anime.  Therefore, manga can be practically based on any subject and style.  There is no clear set of “rules” to adhere to in creating manga.  Hence, manga is not a serious art form. slideshow comment

The general idea was to basically create a nice and simple slideshow. However since I thought we supposed to create two different slideshows I sort of had to divide my efforts into both the linear and nonlinear and therefore couldn’t really make anything neat and fancy. Anyway I tried to make the slideshow as appealing as possible, and in that aspect I think I did well. But in the end it didn’t turn out the way I wanted, if I had known that we can do a combo linear and nonlinear I probably would have come up with something a lot better.

A slideshow that I really liked was Reflections in Puddles. It had a nice appeal and I enjoyed her intro scene very much as well as the roll of film that also acted as buttons. The rain was a neat effect as well.

Week 10 blog

For this slideshow project, I did it on pictures I took when I went to Taiwan. It was a slideshow with two eyes and a smile on the bottom. If you point on the eyes, the pupil will roll up and I think this part work the best because it is funny so it creates some sort of effect. The intention for this project was to form a happy face with small icons on the two sides to navigate from pictures to pictures, but I didn’t succeed in that when I was doing the action script, so I switch and do a linear one.

I think the slideshow on the movie “Twilight” works really well. The slideshow was not really complicated, but it works well because the design was really nice. I would like to have the design in my slideshow too. The design was gray and gold but it matches the theme of the slideshow. It was too complicated or over design so it doesn’t distract the audience from the pictures or what the artists want to say.

Krazy!

Whether or not anime can be considered a serious form of art really depends on the person, but if you ask this person then here is my answer: OF COURSE IT IS!!! However what is anime? At first glance anime may seem to be just another children’s cartoon show, but if one looks into it deep enough one may find out that it is so much more. Just as art itself can mean different things to different people, so can anime. Growing up here in the USA many people here tend automatically classify anything animated as being kid stuff. And who can blame them, practically every cartoon we’ve ever made, or imported from another country, was made for kids in mind, or hacked up and butchered for kids in mind (i.e. Sailor Moon, Voltron, and many others.) The Japanese however chose not to limit themselves to just children and have produced some of the most incredible works of art that has raised the bar for many aspiring artists to go and surpass. Anime has gone from telling simplistic stories to showcasing marvelous adventures that throw our imaginations in overdrive and challenges us to do better and be better than we already are. It has now inspired many premiere artists such as Murakami Takashi and Simone Legno, the creator of the Tokidoki lifestyle brand. Recently the Japan Society has opened a new exhibit named “KRAZY! The Delirious World of Anime + Manga + Video Games” that is dedicated to the world of anime, manga, and video games and showcases some of the best works within the anime world.

Animation is a serious form of art.

According to dictionary.com anime is “a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality”. Most people think that art much be set to be a certain form like paintings, sculptures, drawings. Anime usually won’t come to one’s mind when the term “art” is mentioned. Though this is the case, anime can’t be neglected as just any children cartoon a kid watch day to day or TV screen with moving figures. Anime is a serious art form. It is a unique kind of art by itself. It combines all aspects and kind of art to form the art of animation. Animation will be considered a serious form of visual art.

Krazy!:A Serious Art Form

During my visit to the Japan Society, I learned that anime is a serious art form. The word “anime” is taken from half of Japanese language meaning animation, and anime can be released by television broadcast, video, and online. That is why Japanese anime is very popular and well known all over the world for their animation in term of their style, sound, and character design. Continue reading

For my slideshow project, I created my favorite doll collection called Momiji. I accomplished a lot in this project because I used many techniques to complete each scene. In the first scene, I created music buttons that can play, pause and stop the music throughout the scene. The second, third, fourth and fifth scenes also use buttons to link to different scene by using the same circle shape to create the apple, flower, sun and tree. I also use motion and shape tween to create the butterfly and flower, which I liked very much. I think it fits very well in my slideshow.

Furthermore, the slideshow I enjoyed watching was the one with the slider of rolling film strip at the bottom with many thumbnail photos. I liked the way she created the effect of the rain and the puddle of water in each photograph. The “Singing In The Rain” song fits greatly in slideshow. I would like to learn and take away from was the actionscript of the rolling film slider, which I think I would use in my future project.

Krazy!

Artists and critics interpret art forms differently but claiming Anime is not a serious art form is a complete understatement. As displayed by the exhibition entitled “KRAZY” at the Japan Society, Anime has become a worldwide phenomenon since the 1970s and is an ultimate art form that has exceeded the boundaries of animation and illustration. Slide show portfolio.

My final will be an interactive slide show portfolio of my work. I will create a easy to use interface in which  viewers can maneuver around.  There will be a number of “scenes” in which I will have different categories that viewers can go to from the main page. There will also be simple animations on each page to make it look more appealing. I plan to pay more attention to detail with some contrast in shapes and fonts. I hope to find a way to make turn this into a real website after I perfect it.

Slideshow

For my slideshow, I chose images of animals because i was randomly looking through pictures and liked the quality of the images. From there I made the interface simple and allowed users to click both thumbnails and back and forward arrows, I would have liked to animate how the images showed up on my slideshow project but didnt get the actionscript to work.

I like Jennifer Moy’s clean interface that intergrated a map that can be used to scroll through the pictures and that she used the actionscript to allow the pics to drop down when the next or when she clicked on a button on her map. It just gave the slideshow a nice effect with simple functionality and clean design.

KRAZY!

Anime has its own aesthetic details that Japanese artist have created to express a unique visual style. Japanese artist use anime’s distinct aesthetic details to develop their story telling abilities by using exaggerated stylizations of eyes, body language, emotions, and overall characteristics of each individual character. I believe that anime is considered an art form and has gained a large audience for its manga and anime animations. Continue reading
