The Wilting Flower District
- A man heads home after shopping at the Flower District
- A shopper checks the quality of the flowers in the area
- Many restaurants and offices buy large bundles of flowers
- Some shops specialize in household and garden green plants
- Along with plants, ribbons and flower accessories are sold in great variety
- A small shop keeps its flowers fresh in a refrigerator.
- Flowers wilt as the cold weather affects them, losing businesses money.
- Stores offer deep discounts and go out of business
- Associated Cut Flowers is one of several stores closing in the district
- Shoppers sort through plants displayed outside
- Searching for the right branch
- Leaves, branches, and petals must be swept from the street periodically
- Fake flowers are becoming more popular during the cold months
- The best fake flowers resemble real plants as much as possible
The flower district at West 28th street and 6th Avenue, holds a variety of businesses all dedicated to selling plants, flowers, and their accessories. In the winter months wreaths, Holly, and Christmas trees can be found in almost every store and filling the sidewalks for outdoor sales.
However, it is a precarious business. For every store owner, the need to move the product quickly is essential to making money. The cold weather makes it hard to sell traditional flowers year round. Unfortunately, flower shops are beginning to close down, as less people can afford to pay the expensive price of real flowers. Because of this, stores are expanding their products to include more flower accessories such as ribbons, glass and ceramic pots, and also fake plants.

- Trash takes up half the block, towering over pedestrians

- Keep New York Clean
The growing amount of garbage in the city is becoming a real problem. Litter and pollution can be found not only on the streets but also in various nooks around the city as people carelessly throw their trash anywhere that is convenient.
The trash is so much, that even when it being collected, the amount of garbage bags create giant piles of trash on the street corners that tower over pedestrians walking by. For many, the over abundance of garbage is something that the average New Yorker has started to become accustomed to. However as one of the largest tourist capitals of the world, it is important that the people of New York find a way to make the city clean and more presentable.

- Admiring the Art together
For many, the world of art is something that the general public vaguely knows of and can grow to appreciate in their own right. However, the art community is a tight knit group that only those who are completely dedicated, can enter into.
The people in the art community are those who visit multiple gallery openings in a month. They travel in groups with their artist friends and rather than go out to a movie, they will visit a museum on their weekends.
Whether it is appreciating art by observing and critiquing, interacting with the art itself, or creating their own art through another piece’s inspiration, the people in the art community enjoy the medium in every aspect. And for that, it is a large, but also slightly exclusive community.

Essay:
Approaching this project, I wanted to shoot my friend, Shin Lin. As he works on motorcycles and scooters in his spare time, he takes his work seriously. When I initially started shooting, I thought the pictures would reflect more on his actual taking apart and working on the machines. But being in the atmosphere and trying to shoot, brought out a different side of the work, particularly his working environment and the limitations he faces.
As his workspace is shared with his father, the different tasks he can do within the confines are limited. This pushed me to fine different angles and perspectives while shooting so that each frame was not too similar. I aimed to show his level of concentration to his work as he deals with limitations he can not control.
