ART 5010/5011 Internship

About the course

This course is a work-study program for students interested in graphic communication. Interns put their graphic training to practical use by working for a semester in the design department of a New York-based corporation, cultural institution, advertising agency, design firm, or publication. Professional mentors and the internship coordinator supervise the intern. Additional projects are planned and executed during the semester. Students may enroll once in 5010 and once in 5011. 3 cr; 10-14hrs/week

Students wishing to pursue an Internship in Graphic Communication should contact a full-time graphics professor during the semester preceding the internship.

Email companies you are interested in working with. Start a conversation! Say that you are interested in the work that comes out of the company and would like to get to know the people and environment better. Ask for a brief visit to the company / studio. This can be more fruitful than sending an email with a portfolio. It often helps designers get to the door and make a personal connection which could culminate into an internship.

Most large design firms have really robust internship programs. Learn about what the company does and then contact them. Here are some firms that take on design interns:

HLW International
ESI Design
Ralph Applebaum & Associates
Civic Entertainment
Think Design
Rogers Eckersley Design
