Journal Entry Two

When I was fifteen, my father who was a great businessman passed from lymphoma cancer.  He remains my role model, not because of his great business skills alone but, because he would send $5,000 monthly to Egypt to aid poor communities.   He has shown me that we do have a social responsibility to help.  Volunteering my spare time has helped me not only become a better person, but it has shaped who I am today.

Being a Baruch Scholar requires that I better the community now, before and most importantly later.  As a Scholar I have a moral obligation not to just volunteer my time but to volunteer my time to programs that will further the welfare of the individuals within the community.   The Honors program promotes building character through service, and in fact it encourages it.   Individuals who have been fortunate enough to give an opportunity to students like me, to reach new heights and discover the undiscovered in school, fund the Honors program.  It is through their generosity and service that such a program exists.  Through their intentions it is safe to infer that we are expected to make impacts on society.

The Honors Program reminds us that giving back to the community is important as we continue to further our knowledge.  Within my last two years at high school I completed 150+ hrs of service.  As I continue through my years at Baruch I will continue to perform services and give back to the community when the opportunity arises.
