What does it mean to serve your community? The first thing that comes to mind is volunteering. We believe that it is important for a leader to give back to his/her community. He or she should help the unfortunate. This may include tutoring, working in soup kitchens, organizing various drives and so on.
However, this is not the only way for one to serve his/her community. If a person strives to fulfill his/her fullest potential he/she can give back something more to the community. This individual will now become a role model for his or her community. Younger children will look up to this individual wishing to one day be like him or her.
People used to think that it was impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes. In 1954 Roger Banister broke the ‘four minute barrier.’ Subsequent to this, many other athletes have broken the ‘four minute barrier.’ In fact, it is considered to be the standard of middle distance runners.
In the same way we have to lead the way in our own communities. We must strive to reach our utmost potential to be proper role models for our communities.
Being a part of the Honors Program at Baruch provides me with this opportunity. This program not only encourages us to fulfill community service hours, but also provides us with tools to give back to our communities. We are able to use all of the tools that will be given to us throughout our college experience to become better people- people who are the role models in their community.
