when i was accepted to the Baruch Scholars Program, i knew my goals had to be higher than just achieving a degree.  With my tuition covered, i knew i wouldn’t need to worry too much about earning money. So I knew community service would be not only an educational, but also a moral obligation. In todays world, simply having high grades is not enough.  We must show we are truly beneficial and compassionate to our community and society to obtain high ranking positions in the working world, and high prestige and respect in communities across the globe.

Our role should be to help other others who can’t help themselves. I am looking forward to our community service project because doing volunteer work gives me a good sense of accomplishment and good will to know I am helping others with no benefit being reciprocated to myself. This is related to the culture of service the Honors Program promotes Because the programs strives to sculpt intelligent, selfless men and women to not only give themselves success, but to couple that success with helping others have a life they may not be able to afford or provide. As our economy becomes more competitive and companies start to make volunteer service not only superfluous but a requirement, being “smart” is no longer enough for them.  People must go beyond their call of duty.

I feel if we can create a community not motivated so much by momentary gain, but out of respect for others just for the sake of being human like us, and if we can eliminate the saying “It doesn’t affect me,” we can become a much better society.  Because no matter what, what hurts one person hurts us all as a whole, and service should not be seen as burdensome, but as a responsibility.

As a Baruch Scholar, I receive many benefits including free tuition. As a result, I feel obliged and I want to give back to my community.  Being a Baruch scholar, I understand what it means to receive help and how important and influential it is. This is why I think community service is the best way to show my appreciation for the help that I am receiving

My group has chosen to volunteer at New York Cares. This is an organization that directly helps people in New York City.  I have been a part of this city for the majority of my life and I know the struggles that many people have to go through.  This is an organization that will directly allow me and my group members to contribute. I hope that these contributions will have a positive affect and I hope to help out as much as I can in the time that I spend volunteering. Being a volunteer, is a big responsibility and I want to handle this as best as I can. In addition, I really want to learn about myself and the cause that I will be contributing to. As a Baruch Scholar, I think this program is essential to understanding how our community will function if we were to help out others.

What does it mean to serve your community?

I think serving your community is all about giving back. Each person has his or her own talents and abilities that they can use to help the community. It is not enough to just use your skills to only better yourself. Skills should be used to help out others as well. As a Baruch Scholar in the Honors Program, I have been given so many resources to help further my education and I think it is important to use the education I am receiving to help others and better the world. In the Baruch community, I can serve the community by taking part in events that promote a good cause or help raise money for charity. I hope to take part in these events in the future. I think the community service project is a good idea to promote service because it allows students to say thank you for their scholarship and all the other resources that are made available to them. I am looking forward to volunteering in the soup kitchen and doing something that will help others. In high school, I would cook meals for the homeless but I never actually got a chance to personally meet the homeless and serve them face-to-face. I think the world in general would be so much better off if all the privileged and wealthy people would use their abundant resources to help the unfortunate. People tend to always want more for themselves and soon they have more than they will ever need, while others are struggling. If people were less selfish and put more effort into community service, the world would be a very different place.

What does it mean to serve your community?

As a Baruch Honors student, it is part of my responsibility to be the best student I can be, including getting good grades and becoming actively part of the Baruch community. Other students “look up” to Baruch honors students because it truly is an honor to be part of this program. Everyone wants to feel like their hard work and efforts have paid off. As a Baruch Scholar, it is necessary to give back to a community that has given so much to us. Most Baruch Scholars were born into an environment that allowed each of us to succeed in our goals, especially in school. By participating in community service, in or outside Baruch, we are able to help others with their goals are in life. Other people who have worked hard in life should also receive that feeling of success. There are many people in the world who are not as fortunate and need extra help to succeed. This allows us to grow as individuals and become more well rounded. A Baruch Honors student should truly want to help other people in the community, rather than treating it an an obligation. Helping individuals not only specifically helps the people, but contributes to the community as a whole. Baruch Honors students are given so many opportunities for help, travel abroad, advisement, and even a good place to study;the honors lounge. By giving back to others we are able to say “Thank You” for all of the things we are given. Besides, actions truly do speak louder than words.

Baruch community

The Baruch community is composed of both scholars and regular students. Every student is going for the same goal a 4.0 GPA, and a great job. As a Baruch scholar I see myself as a member of a community, the LC community, the broader Baruch community and my community back home. As a member of a community in my LC I see it as a way to gain friends, acquaintances and meet many new people. As a community we work together in class, and to develop lifelong relationships. Although we all have different interest for the future, we all help each other to excel this semester and continue on. I am very grateful for this LC because it helped me develop relationships and have people there for me.
The honors program works hard for us to develop a sense of giving thanks to our communities and the Baruch community as a whole. I think this is why we have the community service project, as a way to give thanks.
I think Baruch is trying or instill in us not only a feeling of thanks to them but our community. They want us to realize how much everyone has done for us and how we can thank them. We have to thank everyone we have a chance who have done something for us, starting with kids in my own class. From here we are supposed to help our community excel in ways that they can’t with out us. When we do this people will be grateful for us and we have not only excelled in school but community service as well.

What does it mean to serve your community?

Without me knowing, community service has become my second nature. It’s about contributing one’s time, energy, and compassion. Even if Baruch Scholars Program did not require me to complete an eight hours community service, I cannot imagine going through such long period of time without any. Fortunately, there have not been one organization that I didn’t love working with. It is when one views these commitments as their rightful duty that one truly is contributing to the community. This attitude can take you to many places as it did for me.  Once, I had the opportunity of talking to a group of constituents about their concerns, hopes, recommendations, stories, and stands on political issues. Not only was it a valuable experience because I interacted more with my community, but it gave me the opportunity to think in a broader perspective. If Baruch students have not experienced this feeling of giving back to the community and experiencing their impacts, I sure hope that they find what they’re passionate about. The best thing about community service is that anyone can do it. It gives everyone equal chances to contribute. I don’t believe that one man can run the world. It is all about a good balance between quantity and quality. Personally, my life has gained more meaning by getting myself involved with community service such as campaigning for a candidate running for Congress (interacting with all the constituents), a legislator in my county (aiding his work on programs such as the smart seniors), a lobbyist (learning what it takes to stand for a special interest group), a summer academic school (balancing to work with children and the staff), etc.  I feel fortunate for having the awesome experiences that eventually sculpted my own view and opinion.
