A European Coffee Deal of Billionaire Proportions: NY Times Blog Article

Bart Becht, the man behind a 10 billion dollar coffee run is buying out DE Master Blenders 1753, the third largest coffee-maker company in the world.  The bid, one of billionaire proportions is worth 7.8 billion euros in debt, or 12.50 euros a share. This deal makes sense, with several investors buying into consumer goods, combining it with “cheap debt and private capital staked by billionaire families”.  With this kind of pattern happening, it should be assumed that these investors will be long-term. Thanks to the cheap debt, not only will these kind of buyouts probably repeat but most likely be concrete, with debt being so cheap. In fact, Becht is increasing the debt of DE from 258 million euros to 3 billion.

A New Way of Looking at Coffee

Coffee is everywhere these days.  Whether it is at a street cart, or a small bakery or a business such as Starbucks, coffee has become a go-to beverage for all types of individuals.  But what does a person’s coffee drinking habits indicate about themselves? Although it is cheaper to simply make one’s own coffee, some people do enjoy buying their coffee because it allows them to interact with the barista.  Such an individual is lonely and does not value their money as much as they desire to have social interactions with others.  Another interesting fact that you may have not known about coffee is that tests have taken place which have proven that workplaces with a nice beverage area where coffee is available exhibit an improvement in the productivity of its workers.  It seems coffee is more influential to people’s lives and social interactions than anyone would have ever previously assumed!

Coffee Lovers At Risk?

With the ban on sugary drinks, coffee lovers are forced to say farewell beloved beverages that once were on the available at coffee retailers all over NYC and must get used to a lack of sugar to the remaining items still available.  However the ban seems to be ambiguous enough to leave  businesses such as Starbucks to interpret the ban in it’s own terms and in a similar fashion allowing other coffee shops to get around the restricting ban.  That being said, those individuals who love to have their coffee extra sweet will have to now sweeten their own coffees if they desire more than 3 packets of sugar within their ‘cup of Joe’.  According to the ban it would be a violation for the barista to add anymore than just 3 packets of sugar regardless of the customer’s preference.  How will the New York City coffee loving citizens survive? We will just have to wait and see…

Price of Life at Baruch

My group and I went to The Price of Life Club at Baruch and it describes the hardships that workers go through everyday. The Price of Life Club at Baruch ran a campaign, Fair Trade Chocolate & Coffee Tasting, advocating fair treatment through better working conditions, salaries and insurance to the coffee plantation workers who work tough hours in the sun. If you have any comments you want to make, you can say whatever you want about coffee or about this club.
