In the reading, The Language of New Media by Lev Manovich, the author discusses the five principles of New Media. The five principles are:
- Numerical Representation
- Modularity
- Automation
- Variability
- Transcoding
Numerical Representation is all new media objects that is composed of digital codes. New media objects created on the computer have numerical form. Behind the process of new media objects being created underneath all that is a whole lot of mathematics and codes that helps the computer generate your creative process. Modularity involves all aspects of media elements in order to create a complete representation of an artwork, a great example of modularity are pixels in an artwork. All elements has their own individual identity but adds one to compliment larger scaled objects. Automation is using simple algorithm and template to to create new media objects from the computer by users either from scratch or modification. This includes image editing, 3-D graphics, graphic layouts and etc. Variability is the ability to change media over and over again. You can transform the same work in create a whole new idea through numerical coding of media and the modular structure of a media object. It is not a fixed object but something that can exist in different and infinite ways. Transcoding is the connection between the creative ideas coming from an individual and merging it with the technological side of New media to create art. The tools that technology offers us helps open up a new horizon to human expression; digital technology.
