With the rough draft due date coming up in 2 days i havent even started on mine, ive been busy studying for the bio midterm as well as the math midterm that are both going to be within a week from today. I have an idea of what my thesis will be but thats about it. Im planning to make my thesis contradict the standard view which is “deception is bad” and show how altho deception is considered wrong and is frowned upon by society, it is also in many cases necesary. Other then that basic idea i have no clue how to tackle this essay and if its even possible with all the other midterms coming up.

Obama vs Romney

Anyone who watched the latest presidential debate could sense the bloodlust in the room. Throughout the entire debate Obama and Romney where at each others throats. I think that the behavior between the two presidential candidates was ridiculously unprofessional, you’d expect that kinda behavior in second grade, not the white house. I believe that there should be at least some kind of mutual respect between the candidates.

What do you guys think?

After reading “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” a thought came to me, ethics have changed vastly over the past hundred years. So much so that racial diversity has become a much more accepted phenomenon since the 1940’s. But one thing that has not changed is the ethical value of a human life. So has humanities value of ethics in general been lessened?

The average person believes it to be unethical to do wrong to another. But in the nonfictional novel the doctors saw no problem with taking tissue from Henrietta Lacks without her permission to pursue their own interests, some might say that “it did no harm to Henrietta so why would it be wrong?” this is an example of the decrease in humanities value of ethics because those who believe this also know that it is still considered unethical to use a person, whether you want to use em in order to further your own goals and you don’t see how it causes harm to them it is still unethical. Just cause you don’t see how it causes harm to someone does not mean that it doesn’t cause harm to them. Henrietta’s family was devastated when they found out what doctors had done so harm was done. This has become very common among people although they know its wrong. This is especially seen with large companies that do not care for the individual but instead care for their own profits. In conclusion human value of ethics is slowly lessening and we need to ask ourselves, what would humanity turn into if ethics were ever to fade away completely?

The Heart of the Matter

What is the worth of a human life? Would saving a human life be worth ending another? What about an animal, such as a chimpanzee? Are we worth more then them? If we are then who is it that determines that worth? There are about 100,000 chimpanzee’s left in the world and they are considered an endangered species, there are slightly over 7 billion humans, thats 7,000,000,000 and 7000 humans for every chimpanzee left alive. Ethics tries to improve and protect the human lifestyle but what about animals such as chimpanzee’s that are so similar to us? Humans are the cause of the worlds 6th’ mass extinction because ethics does not encourage us to protect anything except ourselves. Would sacrificing the life of a chimpanzee just to enhance the odds of survival of a person be ethical? I believe it wouldn’t. I believe that protecting other species, especially endangered ones such as chimpanzee’s is not only ethically correct but also necessary for the survival of the human race.

What is bioethics

bi·o·eth·ics

“a field of study concerned with the ethics and philosophical implications of certain biological and medical procedures, technologies, and treatments, as organ transplants, genetic engineering, and care of the terminally ill.” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bioethics)

By definition bioethics is a link between ethics and advancements in technology and medicine. It observes the ethical as well as unethical side of, for example birthcontrol. Birthcontrol is a drug that helps prevent unwanted pregancies. The ethical outlook on this drug would be that it decrease’s abortion rate, which is considered very unethical. On the other hand birthcontrol leads to less consideration and caution of intercourse which is also unethical. Bioethics is a field of study that observes medicine and technology in a way such as this.
