Digital Project Presentation

This is a basic step by step process of how I made my 3d item. When I had the idea for the syringe in a baseball i didnt realize that there was already a syringe on thingiverse and all i had to do was throw in the sphere for a baseball. It is oversimplified and looks very basic but that was the idea that i wanted so i stuck with it.

Digital media project

My topic for the research project is going to be the enhancement of humans but technological means and the different reactions people have based on their uses. Specifically this will involve the topics of steroids and the use of adderol. I’m sure tterr are multitudes of different video presentations that I could do to portray this kind of topic but none I can think of that are not overly complicated and just plain boring so I will be opting for the 3d printing option.

I was thinking about something along the lines of a fully functioning syringe wil some sort of pill inside of it. I was looking at the websites for the printing and I see no reason why this kind of thing wouldnt work. It may be a little complicated to actually make the syringe work but I think it’s doable.

I miss music from the 90s. Jason started playing throwbacks before FRO the other day and it reminded me of all the great music from when I was a kid. I don’t know if it was necessarily because the music was great or just because I associate the music with times where everything was easy but to this day music from the 90s is my favorite. Bands like Counting Crows, 3 Doors Down, Oasis and Matchbox Twenty on top of all the countless one hit wonders such as Closing Time by Semisonic and Save Tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry just have the kind of sound that never fails to make me feel nostalgic.

Im actually very surprised no ones written about music in these blogs yet. Maybe its because we all had to do the top 10 list for FRO but today it clicked with me that this was such an obvious choice. Music is something universal, not necessarily the type of music, but the power it has to link up with certain events. I think people tend to associate events or time periods with songs. For example all the bands I listed above remind of when I was younger and life was so easy. It was just me, my friends, and the park. And of course my 90s music.

Not bad

This paper, unlike the first, has me feeling somewhat confident because i can clearly see an answer and a topic to write about and when we wrote the thesis in class one came to mind immediately. I did the same thing last time and that didn’t turn out so well though so we’ll see how this goes. This one will be better though, and the assignment is more clear cut.

I think that the only real problem I’m going to have with this paper is length. I’ve never been very good at putting detail into my writing as I’m more of a straight to the point kind of guy. I just hope that I dont panic midway through and start throwing useless details and all matter of fluff to make the paper longer.

Food is way too expensive

Having spent an absolutely ridiculous amount in the city over the past month and a half or so has made me realize how expensive living in the city really can be. With long days and all of the 1-3 hour breaks that we have in between as an LC it is almost impossible not to get hungry. Personally I eat every like 3 hours so that’s even more of a problem for me but even for someone who doesn’t eat that often during a 9 hour day on Mondays and Wednesdays it is impossible not to get hungry and the easiest thing to do is go and buy food.

The first few weeks of school I didn’t realize how much food cost and I was surrounded by so much good food for the first time that I went nuts and just bought food every time I was hungry. I probably spent over 100 dollars on food in the first two weeks alone, and having no source of income for the winter that’s not a very frugal decision. So I guess this post is more of a pledge to myself that I’m going to restrict my spending and not be broke, mainly by bringing food from home and if i need to buy food its going to be dollar pizza. That is all.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is much more interesting then i expected it to be. This is probably because 95% of the books I had to read during my high school career were absolutely awful. This book actually kept me engaged both because of the topic is pretty interesting and the way it is written keeps me interested.

The only real complaint I have is that I dont like books that jump around with the timeline, but now that Im writing this and thinking about it the story probably wouldnt really be as interesting if it the timeline was how it really happened. If that were the case it would simply be a biography followed by the author writing out the process by which she wrote the book, which would be boring.

1st draft

After i read “The Birthmark” I didnt really know how to start the case study. After sitting in front of my laptop I just started typing and the ideas started flowing. The ideas, however, were very sporatic and very general. I also had trouble formatting the case study in an organized way because of this. In the end I left the draft as is on the first run through so I could change it based on criticism.

Knowing what i know now about my draft I need to focus my ideas and write a stronger thesis. I also need to pay more attention to grammar and organization, neither of which have ever been my strengths.

“The Heart of the Matter”

Throughout history people have used animals as a means for their survival. We as a species have run horses into the ground to get from place to place, we’ve slaughtered countless cows, pigs and chickens for food, and we’ve hunted animals such as beavers for their pelts, and those are only the most basic examples of humans using animals for their own basic needs. I don’t believe that this situation involving chimpanzee hearts is any different; it is using an animal to benefit a human being. I don’t really believe that there is an ethical issue here but I don’t believe that the use of chimpanzee hearts is the best way to do things because they are an endangered species and it would only be a temporary solution at best.

I don’t believe that taking the chimps heart is wrong when it is absolutely necessary, I don’t believe that this procedure should be used in order to make someone more comfortable while waiting for a transplant, I believe it should be used when the person will not survive otherwise. This is simply due to the lack of hearts available, both human and chimp. I’ll go even further than that to say that I believe it is wrong to put an animal’s life over a human’s. Now don’t get me wrong I love animals as much as the next person and animals dying is sad, but letting a human being die because you don’t want to harm an animal is not an idea I am comfortable with.

What is bioethics?

Bioethics is the relationship between biological science and research and whether the procedures and outcomes of that science are morally just towards those that the science is affecting. Who decides what is ethical is entirely situational which is why I think the UNESCO: Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights is a very good guideline because it provides a universal set of ideas on how to approach matters in regards to bioethics without placing excessive restrictions on the situations. This is important because bioethics is completely situational and constantly changing based on newly developed procedures and technology and therefore placing too many restrictions within a guideline like this could potentially do more harm than good. This may even be what the writers of this document had in mind when they wrote it because emphasis is placed on it being a guide in Article 2a where is says “to provide a universal framework of principles and procedures to guide States in the formulation of their legislation, policies, or other instruments in the field of bioethics,” as well as in Article 2b where it is stated that the declarations aim is “to guide the actions of individuals, groups, communities, institutions and corporations, public and private.” The declaration also states that it is “to safeguard  and promote the interests of the present and future generations,” showing that they have brought into consideration that bioethics is a developing field.
