Final Exam Assignment – Post 1

I decided to create a website based on HTML, CSS, jQuery, and a few other technologies… Basically the website is designed to serve as a virtual Resume/Portfolio.

The website is going to have 5 pages…

  • Home –
  • Personal Info –
  • Resume –
  • Gallery –
  • Projects and Works –

The website is going to have sample content to showcase what a complete website will look like and also detailed instructions on how to create one yourself…

The point is that today anyone can create really cool and useful things online by learning online… I basically will provide the necessary knowledge in a condensed task specific manner but the concepts and techniques which i will show are applicable to other projects.

Stay tuned…

Cool music/timelapse collage…

http://youtu.be/9JZ321Cbnw4

The timelapses are really cool but the author did a not so good job at making transitions and syncing the video to the feel of the music with its “valleys and peaks”…

I can do a much better job at putting this thing together… Anyone know of any resources where i can download cool timelapses…?

Spring break 2012 — A not very significant event…

My spring break vacation was not exciting or very significant. I spent most of my time hanging out with friends, trying to catch up on stuff, having fun, doing research, learning programming languages, making 3D models, and last but not least collaborating with a few of my programmer friends on some interesting ideas in terms of new features and functionality…

I also spent significant time brainstorming on a few different web systems that I’m working on, conceptual system design stage — use cases, UI sketches, interactivity, functionality, etc…
Spent a bit of time talking with a few professors from the Baruch Environmental Group about a couple of projects that they are planning to start doing over the summer and what kind of equipment they need for field experiments.

I also caught up on “beauty sleep.” One day i slept for 24 hour…. Awesome, but then my body hurt for half a day and then i stayed up for 36 hours straight… Working on different stuff, watching Tech seminars online, etc.

I also was working on a game structure and design which is a sort of a hybrid between a classic strategy game, economic mastery, and, of course, scientific know-how. I was looking at different ways to make a “lite” version of this game as my semester project for C++ class… Turns out it is very difficult to water it down and now I’m faced with the reality of doing something else…really don’t want to do another financial application dealing with stocks and stuff…it’s been done over and over again and it is the same thing…

So, now i have to figure out what it is i will do for my semester project…

Disgruntled journalists rant…

The internet bubble bust in 2000 had nothing to do with free content on the internet or advertising… It was more related to speculation on the market and overpaying for companies, because the people making investments did not understand the business model and were basing their estimates on the “old, non-internet” businesses models.

MacArthur seems very dissatisfied with the new reality that Internet presents, especially the fact that a lot of news and other written content is available for free and subsidized by advertisement. He seems too steeped in the “old” ways and completely unwilling to change… Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” theory suggests that everyone has to either adapt or become extinct. Well, i believe the same is true in regards to publication online, albeit not all of them. Publications have to either adapt or wither away. As such, most publications have “removed” barriers to their content by making it free. MacArthur is unhappy with the fact that work of writers, their written reports, are being distributed for free based on the idea of “free content, paid by advertising.” Certain aspects of this idea are vague and truly are make believe and kind of unrealistic, but not everything.
The argument that he makes regarding the lack of spreading of knowledge is completely false. He basically over generalizes the idea of content distribution as he sees it from his point of view and related directly to the industry he works in. News reporting and journalism aside…the internet has greatly improved the lives of most people by creating new industries, new jobs, raising the bar for qualifications and skills people need to have in order to succeed.
I don’t really care about his opinions on the internet…my opinions are completely different from his and i don’t want to get into the long-winded rant about why, because i already mentioned it briefly above… His opinions in regard to Journalism are eye-opening, i did not know that writers were being compensated so poorly… As such, compensation of writers is not the responsibility of readers…the company employing and distributing their content is responsible for fair compensation.

From being in the Audience to becoming a Producer…?

The shift from people being simply observers/consumers of content, to becoming producers can be seen all around… Take for example the simple act of writing a blog post…the one i am making right now. Back in the day this was unheard of. Today, anyone can be their own little mass media outlet, completely run from a laptop…now that is a complete sea-change in terms of content production and distribution. I would not call it a “revolution” simply because it has not had as widespread effect on the population at large as Radio or TV had… Most people still consume media in the form that they are most familiar and comfortable with – TV, radio, and printed news…but that is changing. As technology, in general, becomes more and more easy to use and acquisition costs decreases on a daily basis, the future most likely will favor distributed media model, such as micro blogging for live updates and reporting, blogging for rich media articles, podcasts for live or recorded discussions, and many others. Every day more and more people of all ages switch to digital tech for the reason of consuming multimedia content. Things like eReaders, tablets, and other mobile devices capable of viewing digital multimedia are being adopted throughout society, in businesses, schools, and for personal recreation purposes. As time goes on, we will see more and more of these devices on the market and more and more people using them. It is very likely that the future of mass media will be in the form of distributed model, meaning you will still have large mass media companies, but they will license most content from private entities, bloggers and such, who they deem to have good content and relevancy. Lets wait and see.

In my “community” there was little change simply because of, at least in my point of view, cultural reasons. However, my peers, have embraced the trend because we are younger, much more tech-savvy then our parents and older generations, and we see potential in this technology. It does not mean that we want to become our own news companies or mass media companies. We just simply have the means to contribute our opinions and thoughts on issues we want to discuss. Some see an opportunity for commercial reasons, other just want to be heard. Whatever the reason, the point is that we have the ability to be heard by millions of people, and that’s basically it.

PS: I wrote this entire post in MS Word and then copied it to WordPress… There is something about WordPress that throws my thinking off when i write a paper/article type of post, such as this one. Blogging is a very different experience then writing a paper.

Design – conceptual modeling

Well i decided to share a few of my projects that i made in SketchUp… Some of these projects are just conceptual and spatial studies, not the final versions of the project, and some are final versions.

Apartment Design – High Efficiency proto

Canal front-facing building design concept

Guesthouse/Low footprint, high efficiency design

Trench digger machine – High efficiency, rapid trench digging system… The middle section with the wheeled diggers has height adjusting capability for digging trenches of the same width but different depth for laying cables, pipes, or any other infrastructure needs.

Game assets design…

  • A quick conceptual design of a Starport building for a game that myself and a friend of mine wanted to make…but we didnt raise enough finances in order to get it programmed… I was in charge of making the assets and tech tree logic…

  • A full scale model of a conceptual tank with dual cannons… Was going to be also in the game…

How to model a classical column (Doric Type)…

I decided to make another video which demonstrates how to use Sketchup to make a model of a Doric Column…

If anyone is interested in Architecture, Engineering, 3D Modeling,  or Design…comment with questions and i will try to answer as many as i can to the full extent of my knowledge…

Enjoy the demo…

Cognitive surplus – not always constructive

While in principal i agree that cognitive surplus on the internet is better than watching TV or engaging in any other purely consumption oriented form of spending free time. But, in all honesty, my core opinion is that there is too much BS that doesn’t really contribute to anything important or enlightening…and that overwhelming amount of BS dilutes the real benefits of the internet and its affects on cognitive surplus. The explosion of social media produced varying results…

On one hand it does connect people and facilitates a kind of a forum where ideas and opinions are exchanged, sometimes producing truly unique results.
On the other hand it created a new realm for those people who don’t really have anything constructive to say and really use social media for their own “existential” purposes… These people try to attract attention and reinforce, in a way, the importance of their insignificant lives through all kinds of nonsense…
One of the best examples of this behavior is when completely random people you dont know start talking to you online like they actually have known you forever and always put their 5 cents in like anyone really gives a damn… Happened to me multiple times on YouTube… After that i completely isolated myself from all the morons who sit on YouTube ranting about all kinds of BS… Now, if someone messages me it goes straight to trash… That way i save myself a bunch of nerve-cells and dont have to deal with Global idiots…who often cant even spell “you.”
Facebook is another prime example… When it first started, there weren’t that many privacy options and completely random people were commenting on my pictures… WTH is that all about? Its nuts, some random people started commenting in all kinds of languages on my pictures… The best example i can think of is the following… Imagine you are sitting at a park and someone comes up to you and says, “hey is that shirt from Armani?” You reply, “no…” And they reply, “too bad…” What the hell? Seriously if that ever happened to me in real life…i would …………………….
Another amazing social trend that i noticed is that sometimes, especially on tech forums, you have complete “NOOBs” asking question and looking for quality information from the tech community… I Love that aspect of the internet and cognitive surplus, as i am, myself, a user and contributor on many tech forums…
Most of the time people who are knowledgeable in the topic will provide a very good explanation and the “NOOB” will understand everything from just one reply… When that happens you feel great because you helped someone out with a problem they were dealing with.
But sometimes it takes more than one reply to explain how to troubleshoot something or fix an error or whatever…and that’s when idiots come out of their caves and start giving all kinds of BS advice… Half baked/misunderstood info that they literally got from a general topic on Wikipedia and are trying to pass off as a technical solution…as if they are information systems engineers or have any low-level understanding of how computers and information are actually related… So what ends up happening is the following… “NOOBs” get soo confused because they are being provided with a lot of different information from completely different sources… On one hand you have knowledgeable computer people who are either professionals in the field, or just advanced users who have dealt with the same and/or similar problem before and actually know what they are talking about… and on the other hand you have some 12 year old who thinks he is “super computer guy” and starts throwing terms around from completely different areas as if they sound cool when combined, not actually explaining anything at all… And thats when the community gets pissed-off because this PUNK is feeding misinformation to other people who are confused as is… People start to argue and within a day or so that account, the PUNK, usually gets banned by Admins… “Thank GOD for database and user controls.”

So, my point is that it would be best for all those who actually do something productive on the web, if all those stupid teens, bored stalkers, or just freaking weirdos, would go back to laying on the couch and drooling like idiots watching some stupid show on MTV or whatever and not pollute the web with their BS and nonsense…

I think the commercial below will kinda demonstrate what i mean…
PS: This is a very light example of what im talking about…

If anyone experienced the kind of stuff that i was describing in relation to Forums…leave a comment… Thanks!

Also…”NOOB” is just a word used in the Tech community to describe someone who is not knowledgeable or a rookie… Not disrespect, just tech lingo…

Something every human being should see…at least once…in their lifetime!

Every person who said that they didn’t want to go to space was either lying or just simply is not human, as humans are are curious creatures and explorers by nature…

So, look at this awesome video of Earth as seen by the ISS crew in LEO (Low Earth Orbit – 90 minute orbit)…

Blue and Green light show are Aurora Borealis…aka Northern Lights… They occur when particles in solar radiation hit the magnetic field of Earth and are trapped within the magnetic field… The more radiation coming from the Sun, also knows as Solar Wind, the more intense the light show!

Enjoy!

How to make 3D Models…

I decided to create a video tutorial that will demonstrate how to make 3D models… Using the principles shown in those videos you can pretty much design and model anything you can image…

Also, i created a flash app which has descriptions for all the tools that are needed to create basic or advanced 3D models… When you hover over the icon of the tool, the info will appear below… Enjoy…
