Norwood, Bronx
The Norwood, Bronx is originally an Irish neighborhood that has included in its ranks of elasticities from all over the world. The neighborhood now is predominately Hispanic and Bengali. The neighborhood itself is very historical and it has the landmark of the Museum of Bronx History. The Bronx Museum of History is found in a house that dates before the Revolutionary War. The museum showcases the historic battle found in Gunhill Rd. It also showcases more recent events that had occurred in the Great Depression and Vietnam War. The Museum is located right by Oval Park. Oval Park is the epicenter of the neighborhood because it contains acres of lush land. The field is used by the Bron High School of Science in Tennis and Soccer. The Oval is great for young kids since there are 3 playgrounds as well as full tennis courts and basketball courts for adults. The Oval is recently being renovated in order to be more up to date and in the needs of its users. Right by the park is St.Brendan’s Church, which is modeled on the boat. The architecture of the building is beautiful and the brick stick out in order to make hundreds of mini ledges, many people have tried to climb to the roof of the building, which houses a massive cross. The recent for the boat shape is because it is based on St Brendan the Navigator. By St. Brendan’s is the local McDonalds which has people from all over enjoying a cup of coffee or a cheeseburger. The McDonalds has been in the neighborhood for ages and it is a symbol of both unity and recreation. While these pictures were taken there was a fire occurring at the corner of Perry Avenue. The neighborhood had withstood over 8 fires which had occurred last year. In fact close to 20 stores have been burned down and the neighborhood had gone through a serious make over. The Pictures showcase the rush of fire trucks which total around 3, which is a rather high amount for one fire. However this area receives more trucks because of past occurrences. The Neighborhood is based on a series of hills and the elevation increases as the street number. This makes the neighborhood resemble San Francisco since the two have hilly streets. The area also houses several schools, P.S. 56 is an elementary school, which contains grades K-5. Right by P.S. 56 is St. Brendan School, which a Catholic School. Down by Webster is P.S. 20, which is right by the 52nd Precinct. The neighborhood is home to much drug dealing and the 52 focuses most of its efforts with the pedaling of narcotics. The area is home to the D train since it is the last stop of the D. Overall the Norwood area is a tight nit area with a lot of history in it. I took these pictures not in a certain order however the order in which I was moving. When you walk straight up to Decatur you will find PS 56, my sistser’s old school and it is only across the street from my apartment. I however went to PS 20, which is right by the 52 precinct. The decor of the two schools is surprisingly different in PS20 there is more emphasis on discipline and police officers would come to the school to prove a point. PS 20, whose completion happened in the late 90’s is also much bigger and grander. These two public school compared to the Catholic school of St. Brendans are night and day different. Children at St. Brendan’s do not misbehave and discipline is taught at an early age. My experience from going at both schools is that the days in PS 20 are much more enjoyable because its a more carefree environment, however St. Brendans has more days off and there are actually snow days in the catholic school system. Right by St Brendan’s church is oval park, which is home to alot of playgriunds and basketball courts. However growing up I remember going to Mosolu Park down by decatur. The park was massive since it was connected to the Bronx River Forest and would extend all the way to the Bronx Zoo. Growing up me and my friends would just spend hours walking down the different routes of the Bronx RIver forest. The McDonald’s in my neighborhood has several regulars theres a section in the back where only Irish old ladies sit. The McDonalds was newly renovated and because of it is receiving more customers.
