Anegada is a very quiet island, with about 200 BVIslanders living there. Because of this, Anegada is home to many of our wildlife. With only one main road on the island, you will be able to see our bright pink flamingo friends in their marsh habitat (pictured below) as you head to one of Anegada’s famous beaches, Loblolly Bay. One of my favorite things to do there is read a book. With the quiet, I can easily relax and even fall asleep.
Usually ignored by tourists, Anegada is known for their pristine beaches with shallow waters, which is great for non-swimmers to enjoy. You can easily walk several yards into the water in certain places without worrying about the small current pulling you off your feet. You can float in the water and watch the sea turtles swim nearby. They don’t come too close, so it’s the perfect way to see them paddle along slowly. If you’re really lucky, you might see the giant black leatherback turtles on the beach during nesting season, but don’t get close as they are an endangered species. They can weigh an average of 1000 pounds!
Recently, they’ve created a reef with conch shells and dead coral in order to replenish the natural habitat and create a home for the sea creatures. Conch is a local delicacy that has been difficult to find unless you know where to look. The locals have put a limit on how many conch they can catch in order to prevent them from going extinct in the area. This reef was created so that we can facilitate the growth of their population and counteract the over-fishing of conch and other creatures.
