Road Town: The Heart of Tortola

Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands, and where most of the country’s inhabitants live. I lived here as well with my family. My favorite part of Road Town is the Cay, a large open area manufactured by filling in the marina with sand from the deeper parts of the ocean in order to make the island bigger and provide a safe space for cruise ships to dock. The picture below is of the Cay before it was remade. I used to go there every week with my family to play and watch the cruise ships as they came in.

Tourism is one of the two industries that drive the British Virgin Islands’ economy. In order to strengthen the tourism industry, the government has added more buildings and shops to the Cay in the past few years. They have added a yogurt shop, island apparel store, bars, restaurants, and a mini park to enjoy the calming atmosphere. Many locals also go there to get a snack and relax since the area isn’t restricted for locals to go anymore.
