Capturing Communities in Words and Images:

Along Malcolm X Blvd.

The day was overcast, sunlight peeked in and out of the clouds. Sort of chilly. I felt like a tourist taking these pictures. It felt strange. People stared at me, with questioning looks. What is she doing? They must have asked themselves. I tried to take each photo without letting the subjects know I was taking their photograph. Some knew though. I asked permission for some shots taken but others I pointed the camera and prayed I caught something interesting.  Some people were welcoming and did not have a problem with being photograph by a stranger. Only one person asked “Are you going to put my picture on the Internet?” My answer was no then yes, when I remembered the website. He laughed then went on his way. I did not include his photo here. Overall it was an awkward, somewhat frighteningly weird experience. Maybe I felt this way because I went alone.

  1. All of these pictures are fantastic. Each one is extremely distinct and seems to evoke different a feeling.

I would be very interested to read the field notes for each and how you came across all of these people.

It seems as though you could write a rich feature story about any of one these individuals.

  2. The picture “Leading Man,” is just excellent. I love how the colors play with the person walking by. I think the picture shows just how artistic graffiti can be and that it should be given more credit because it isn’t just random self-expression or vandalism.

  3. The picture “Leading Man” captures beautifully the soul of this neighborhood. The old stone column still stands to support the new art. The asymmetry of the different elements in the frame tells us about its quirkiness. Amid all that walks a young woman, so familiar with the scene that she seams unaffected by it. For her its just the local reality.

  4. Couldn’t agree more with Hipparchia and Ayla. “Leading Man” totally took me back to my days growing up as a kid. Just came across these pictures and this site. Awesome stuff!

  5. It is actually hard to find knowledgeable people with this topic, but you seem like you know what you are writing about! With thanks

  6. Valuable information. Lucky me I found your website unintentionally, and I’m shocked why this accident didn’t came about in advance! I bookmarked it.
