Blogs#9 RiP: A Remix Manifesto
Recent advances in technology have led to the increased malleability of media like text, music, and video. Concurrent advances in the speed and flexibility of communication have resulted in the growth of information, where amateurs and regular citizens are making use of copyrighted content in the process of civic engagement. Meanwhile, others are using copyrighted content to build a culture of remixes and mash ups — essentially multimedia collages — exercising a great deal of wit and creativity in the process.
There is a fierce debate around intellectual property rights is playing out in the courtrooms of the world, involving everything from new technology patents to computer software licenses. But It seems it’s the music industry, and in particular those musicians fight for copyright reform of music sampling who offer one of most compelling illustrations of this ongoing tension. At least, that’s the impression we get from: A remix manifesto.
In the movie “RIP: A Remix Manifesto” they want to use fair use rule to against the Violation of using unpermitted music resource. As an exception to copyright, fair use has been keys to the freedoms individuals have in interacting online. Fair use permits individuals to do things that could otherwise be deemed illegal under copyright law — like using clips from a television show in a video produced to comment on a controversy related to the television show. The copyright statute codifies the following four factors in weighing whether or not the use of a copyrighted work is a fair use.
However, I agree with the point that the movie made, which are people have freedom to create new things. In nowadays, the copyright becomes the tool people use it to make money. There are some big companies for example, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group. These companies have about 90% of music copyright and every year they use these copyright make billions dollars. The root of why people use copyright is to be a spur to artistic creativity and producing or singing to make their fans enjoy. But now the copyright becomes a cage that locks autistic’s creativity because most new things are based on old and traditional culture. People have to pay the companies who hold copyright in order to use the old and beautiful music or movie. I think if people continue doing that, it not only hurts the world culture but also hurts companies’ benefits in the long run since there are fewer new music or movie coming out.
In the movie, that a more subtle, sophisticated debate is being sacrificed in the interests of a video clip. I think director choose a rock star as spokesperson in not a good idea. There are so many issues foe instance; often emotional, that is so close to the surface of these characters that I often find myself pondering these, rather than the message at hand.
