Updates on Thesis and Claims

Still not perfected, but I think the thesis will be something like:

“By changing how we learn, the Internet has also altered the architecture of learning, mainly in classrooms and libraries, forcing beneficial physical changes to adapt to this advance in learning.”

Supporting Claims: I am still looking for more sources, and always trying to improve on the ones I have now, but 2-3 good supporting claims are:

1) It has been proven that students have benefited from Internet techniques such as video learning and because of this, classrooms and libraries have changed. They have added more Internet resources to assist in student education after seeing how positive the effects were. Libraries have especially focused on Internet to change with the current times. The role of the librarian has also been changed and I may go into that for a physical change as well. Maybe even online renewing and such.

2) Classrooms have taken to the Internet with virtual classrooms rather than traditional settings. The additions of blogs, Blackboard, projectors and the like have benefited student learning and are staples in classes today. Comparing these classrooms to the ones years ago will show a big difference, I may use a personal story about how even my middle school classrooms have changed since I left, with projectors allowing for Internet to be shown.

There are other claims I am working with but it is hard to judge which my best supporting claims are. I am thinking of:

– The libraries that have not adjusted by adding Internet resources have struggled financially.

– The setup for classrooms and libraries allows for more mobility now in order to crowd around computers, making technology a focal point of learning.

  1. I think you have a clear organization and balance of ideas. Having settled that, here are some thoughts that came into my mind reading your thesis.

    1) Technological development>> change in how we learn>> change architecture of learning?
    OR
Technological development>> change of architecture of learning >> change in how we learn

The introduction of Internet has allowed changes in our classes and libraries. But was it necessarily after having proved the benefits of learning? Has the use of Internet in classrooms and libraries caused us to alter our way of learning or perhaps studying? Along with clear organization, I think it’s also important to clarify the causal relationship in a research.

I think your challenge would be providing a strong evidence to support your idea “it is PROVEN that students have benefited from internet techniques,BECAUSE OF THIS classrooms and libraries have changed.”

  2. You could talk about how influential the internet is, making it ideal for learning and assignments. You could discuss the prevalence, since even though many classrooms use the internet, some use it more than others. The connections and availability the internet gives is something to note too. There’s a lot to elaborate on how beneficial the internet actually is.
There’s also a clear distinction between technology and the internet. Things like powerpoint can help learning and presentation, but aren’t the internet. Of course, internet helps with sharing files or assignments. But I would be careful combining both technology and the internet. Computers would be a more general term.

  3. I definitely agree with the two comments above. The thought that occurred to me while reading the revision of your claims was the possible counter-argument of the fact that modern technology is always going to be lagging behind in some sense, or weighing the current technologies down.

For example: the cost of smart-boards being implemented into classrooms; some may argue that that is more of a negativity than a plus when it comes to these changes to a classroom environment.
