About
Julio Salcedo Fernandez is the Director of Urban Design and is the former Chair at The City College of New York. He holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University and a BA from Rice U. His teaching experience spans prestigious institutions like Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, and Cornell University.
Julio is deeply dedicated to advancing social and environmental justice in urban design. His recent work has involved Urban Resource Recovery in a wider project with NYC. In 2020, he participated in Neighborhoods Now, a revitalization initiative for underserved NYC communities sponsored by the Urban Design Forum and Van Allen Institute, responding to multiple pandemics.
He co-chaired the ACSA / COAM international conference “”New Instrumentalities”” addressing cities in crises. His design advocacy, in collaboration with the late Michael Sorkin, has gained media recognition, including features on PBS and NY1. Julio’s activities have been widely published internationally.
Department and Climate Courses
UD 61001: Urban Design Lab I – 6 credits
This course constitutes the first half of a year-long design research lab. Organized around a series of lectures and design workshops, the course will develop research agendas to analyze and catalyze imaginative urban studies. The course will also provide students with critical tools to examine social, environmental, and technological concerns in design processes. These include but are not limited to geospatial mapping, environmental simulations and planning, urban anthropology, and economic and data analysis.
Climate Research
