I was amazed how much the government is willing to listen to the people, when they really worked hard to get what they want. Like, the Pickapal, I was surprised that they amended it just weeks after they announced that Pickapal should close down. I’m a little confused though as to why the bus company can ask the government to do something like that. They specifically said that carpooling should always be inconvenient, and Pickapal doesn’t follow that “rule.”
Also, I was a little disappointed that Korean teenagers teamed up to stop the importing of beef from here in the United States knowing that their reason is that their favorite singer is against the importation. But still, it was another successful collaboration. According to the book, thousands of people participated, so the government had to listen to them.
Another point that struck me is the fact that the AOL “volunteers” sued AOL for not paying them. It was their choice to stay in AOL even though it became an advertising company. If they didn’t like the fact that it changed to an advertising company, they should have quit a long time ago. Plus, they shouldn’t sue AOL for not paying them for the times that they have worked for them because they are just VOLUNTEERS.
About Chapter 3, the one that got me really curious is that how much did the GrobanitesForCharity had to expend to make the project successful. According to the book, they didn’t even take a cent from the income and that they used their own money to cover for the expenses. It was also mentioned that they even made t-shirts and other things that must have cost a lot of money. I was curious as to what their real motive is. At first, I really believe that it’s all for Josh Groban. In the end, I think that it’s more on the fact that they actually want to help people. They raised so much money and worked so hard to make it successful even though they’re not going to get paid.

I’ve always wondered how Wikipedia really works because practically every professor wouldn’t let his/her students use Wikipedia as their source. I had wondered if it’s really that unreliable, until I read an article months ago stating that Wikipedia is almost as accurate as Britannica. If that’s the case why do professors wouldn’t let their students use Wikipedia?
Going back to Clark Shirky’s book, it was discussed how Wikipedia was created, and how it became the Wikipedia that we know now. I kind of figured that it wasn’t really easy considering the amount of information that Wikipedia contains. It was mentioned that even the article about asphalt had been edited so many times.
It doesn’t matter if the person writing the article is knowledgeable, knowing a little is enough. That’s what makes Wikipedia different from every thing else because just one little article that probably doesn’t mean anything to most of us, is a collection of data probably created by a nobody who had collaborated with hundreds of people to make it successful. It’s amazing what people can do when they work together.

The first thing that popped in my head after reading all this was KONY 2012. When I watched the 30min long video, I was amazed on how much efforts people exerted in to that project to save the children that Kony kidnapped, and how successful things have been going on for them. It was mentioned in the video that, the government wouldn’t do anything about that matter if the people wouldn’t show that they really care about the project, and that they really believe that the government should really help Uganda.
It’s practically the same as this. They all worked hard to retrieve the phone that Sasha have stolen. I kind of feel like she got harassed for the reason that she’s still young and that’s kind of a traumatic experience for her, but the point is she stole the phone and she refused to return this.
Going back to the subject, the organization that Evan had created is just amazing. I personally didn’t know that that’s possible. I guess that relates to the topic that we discussed in class, which is the network effects. Evan just proved how powerful the network effect can get.
Aside from the organization and network effects, something about news and how its being broadcasted was also mentioned. This has been an on going subject. Whether or not news should only be done by professionals. Some people people that it should be done by professionals just because it wouldn’t be biased plus they have a more solid idea of what really happened.
But I remember this one time in my Speech class where in my professor showed us a newspaper. I can’t really remember what the big news was about, but right next to the big news there was a picture of a woman trying to jump of the building, and there was a huge writing of “NOOO!” written all over the picture. My professor concluded that the editor doesn’t approve of the big news. [It has something to do with the a decision that the government is going to make.] and that the editor purposely wrote “NOOO!” next to it to manipulate the readers to make them think that the government shouldn’t do what they’re planning to do.
So it’s really hard to tell. People will say what they want to say professional, or not.

I feel like it’s just right to have this kind of “security.” This is about safety, and it’s actually up to the people what kind of information they will give. It’s the people’s safety that’s at stake here, like what happened in Vegas. They even thought about cancelling the celebration of New Year’s Eve. Plus, we wouldn’t want another 9/11. It wouldn’t kill us if they would use our information. It wouldn’t hurt, except for identity theft.
Like what the woman said in Chapter 5, she felt like it’s not fair for the government to check on her files just because she’s in Vegas celebrating New Year’s Eve. It’s her choice to go there, and I feel like it’s comparable to “terms and conditions.” If you don’t want to accept it, then, you can’t use it. Other people can’t sacrifice their safety just because other people don’t feel like giving out their information.
