On Our Way

As of right now all three of us are administrators and can therefore edit, post and upload as well as many other activities on this blog. This post is actually a test to see if the email notification is working so if you are now reading this it is because every time one of us writes a post on the blog we will receive an email letting us know that something is up…

I also wanted to say that we have put the Katherine Miller book on order at the Book store and are willing to let the students get the 4th edition and Caryn and I will be supplementing the first chapter with the Eisenberg chapter, more details on that later.

    hey ladies —

this is great! sorry for my delayed participation here — i’m back from a conference and will get some thoughts on the course philosophy (along with the approved course description) and some thoughts on syllabus ideas up this week some time – i also put up the documents we looked at when we last met about topics, etc.

Suzanne, any thoughts on the Rhetoric of Work? We can use ideas out of the book and/or the first chapter — there is also a good article cited in the first chapter on how we talk about what a ‘real job’ is that i’ll put up here on the website — its great and can be turned into an exercise with the same impact to help us think about how communication shapes how we think about work.

For what its worth, the org com conference i just attended really supports all of the thoughts we’ve been talking about — really focusing on communication practices across different types of organizations and organizing processes — per Suzanne’s comments about including non-profits, ngo’s and community based organizations — and giving students both a broader sense of what communication as well as recognizing how most people ‘out there’ think about communication as well as a strategic tool. we were also talking about the importance of including views of communication from a diverse set of organizational members and stakeholders . . .

also, some great talk about the need to incorporate both the use of new technologies and the inclusion of how new technologies are shaping communication within our organizations as well;)

so, i think we’re really on track!!! v. exciting.

    ok, more later . . . c
