Policies and Student Resources

RESOURCES

Writing Center: The Writing Center supports all undergraduates attending Baruch College. Writing Center consultants are academic professionals with strong teaching, composition, and ESL experience. The Writing Center provides one-to-one sessions (in person and online) and various workshops on the writing process, research, and grammar. Students can schedule appointments and sign up for workshops from the Writing Center’s website or by going to the Writing Center during its open hours at 646-312-4012.

Disability Services: Baruch has a continuing commitment to providing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Like so many things this fall, the need for accommodations and the process for arranging them have been altered by COVID-19 and the safety protocols currently in place. Students with disabilities who may need some accommodation in order to fully participate in this class should contact Student Disability Services as soon as possible at [email protected]

Counseling: The Counseling Center operates as part of Student Affairs.  They offer confidential, individual and group counseling and psychotherapy in the Annex Building at  137 East 25th Street (9th floor) http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/studentaffairs/counselingCenter.htm Contact:  (646) 312-2155 or email [email protected]

Emergency Funds: Through generous donations from alumni, outside agencies, foundations, and other individual on- and off-campus donors, Baruch College is pleased to provide emergency grants to its students who are beset by financial difficulties. These grants are managed by the Office of the Dean of Students.  https://studentaffairs.baruch.cuny.edu/dean-of-students/emergencyfunds/

A Note on Immigration Status: As an educator, I fully support the rights of undocumented students to an education and to live free from the fear of deportation. If you have any concerns in that regard or need resources so that you or an undocumented family member can attend and excel in college, I will make myself available as an advocate and keep your status confidential.

Recognition of Religious Pluralism: I encourage you to honor your religious holidays. Students who have religious observances that coincide with this class should email the professor at least two weeks in advance. Every effort will be made to reach mutually-agreeably accommodations.

Childcare: If you have care responsibilities for a child and your childcare needs come into conflict with the course schedule, please don’t feel as though you have to miss class. You are welcome to have your child/ren with you during synchronous sessions. If you have questions about this, feel free to contact me.

CLASS POLICIES

Academic Honesty: Use of the intellectual property of others without attributing it to them is considered a serious academic offense.  Any cheating or plagiarism (which includes the failure to cite and quote properly) may result in the grade of “F” on the respective assignment or the course.

Attendance:  Class attendance will be recorded during each synchronous session.  Students are expected to be prompt, attentive, and engaged in all class discussions.  If you must miss a class due to an emergency or illness, you are responsible for reaching out to find out what was covered in that day’s class, including announcements and assignments.  Please email me before your absence if you know you will not be in class.

Tardiness: Because we have a limited number of synchronous sessions and it is important to respect your peers’ time, it is important to arrive on time during each synchronous session. We will start each class period promptly and most announcements will be made at the beginning of class. If a student arrives after s/he has been marked absent, it is the student’s responsibility to email me and ensure that his or her attendance is recorded.

Due Dates: Notes are due each Thursday by 12:15pm.  All assignments must be submitted by their due date to receive full credit. Late work will not be accepted, unless a reasonable accommodation has been negotiated via email with the professor before the due date.  In the event of an emergency that causes a student to miss class on the day of a presentation or project due date, arrangements must be made before the absence whenever possible and the student must reach out to the instructor to determine if a reasonable accommodation is available in order to make up the assignment.

Safe Space: During class sessions, we will engage in discussions of a range of sensitive topics, including undocumented immigration, ethnicity, race, religion, sexuality, war, politics etc.  It is my hope that students will share their views and ideas, and thereby create and sustain a rich learning environment. Not all students will always agree with or support the viewpoints expressed by their classmates.  However, it is imperative that we maintain a safe place for all to learn and share. Remember that all personal information shared in class should be respected and guarded.  Interruptions, sarcasm, or dismissal of others’ ideas will not be tolerated.  In order for all of us to learn, we must be willing to listen to each other.  We can challenge, encourage, support, and respectfully disagree with one another.  However, we may not insult, interrupt, or refuse to listen to each other.

Communication:  It is my desire to ensure that you do as well as possible in this class.  To that end, please communicate to me any issues, problems, questions, or concerns you may have along the way.  Please email me if you have any concerns about our class or about college in general, and I’ll be happy to set up a time to meet with you via phone or Zoom.
