A New Playground for Deviance!!
While looking for some articles on deviance I came across one that really struck me and is becoming more controversial as well and is something that needs our immediate attention. While hearing about death of college students by means of cyber bulling on facebook, I feel that as technology advances and this world shrinks, deviant behavior takes on a new form, cyber bullying is becoming a bigger issue each day.
The article that I came across puts emphasis on this growing concern. Technological advances no longer keep bulling in the school yards and lunch room it occurs on the internet as kids bully each other; often ruining lives, to the point where it is tragic like the student who killed himself atRutgersUniversity. It comes to a point where this issue must be taken more seriously. The internet is becoming a new campus for criminal activity and it needs to be policed.
Technological advancement in today’s society is great, however the continuous advancement lead to new doors opening up for this technological deviance to occur. Sure we police our cities, schools, but are we really doing enough to handle what is going on the internet. It’s a breeding ground to allow a new birth of deviant behavior. It’s a deviant behavior that takes place behind closed doors so when you may think your child may be okay, safe in his/her room, it may not be as safe as you think. Deviance is taking a on different form and we should be aware now more than ever.

Hero turned Mobster
A man that was a war hero in World War II now become a mobster that was involved in man slaughter and gang related crimes. It is not easy to tell who has deviance inside him, you can never tell until that person actually commits a crime. It’s a clear example with Sam Volpendesto, a veteran War hero that saved lives and earned several medals now will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Due to this convicted Sam might not even be able to be buried at the Arlington National Cemetry outside of Washington D.C. for war veterans. Sam still denies any claims that he was part of any gang related activity and that he never made a dime from these crimes.
This shows the deviance can take over anybody, even a person that was brought up in the military and was taught ethic and moral judgment. But unfortunately Sam learned how to assist in murder and crime during the years of service. Wars can bring up trained killers inside of respectfully humble individuals. Its a disgrace not only for himself but also for his family that was proud of his service in WWII. Now the remaining years of his life he will look at them behind bars…just like the men he put away. As the article stated,”War service is not a license to commit crimes.” I believe that some people believe they can get away with anything if they serviced in the army, and it is not unusually because US give a lot of power to those in the forces.
Punishing children
After reading this article it was funny to me how the mother punished the little boy. All the little kid did was lie about misbehaving in school. I understand the mother is trying to implement the right morals and conduct on the boy but with hot sauce and a cold shower. Come on is the boy actually going to learn anything from that, I really doubt it. The boy is from Russia, your not going to teach this boy anything by squeezing hot sauce in his month and making him tell you that you lied. Coming from a Russia, you better have something better than that, that little kid is not going to learn anything. You got to come up with something better than that.
Funny thing is this story made Dr.Phil and now the mother is on trial. Yeah it is kinda harsh to do that to a little kid but putting somebody on trial for that, I wonder what kind of punishment the court is going to give her. You got all these lunatics on the lose in US and their worried about a mother that punishes her kid with hot sauce and a cold shower. Cold shower probably helped since his mouth was burning a bit. When this kid is going to grow up, he will definitely laugh about this. This just shows how some small deviance is taking out of proportion. I think US just tries to show how good their justice system is but it just shows how ridiculous it is.
How does Graffiti fit into Broken Window Theory?
Graffiti is often looked at from many different perspectives. This video illustrates Graffiti as either vandalism, or an art form. A local store owner, whose business is riddled with Graffiti, thinks its vandalism, while a Los Angeles Museum exhibits it as art. But these different viewpoints force us to ask whether or not Graffiti acts as a stimulus in the collapse of a community.
The question this video asks is not correct for our argument. A more pertinent question would be, how does the community view Graffiti, as art or vandalism? If Graffiti is viewed as vandalism, then it acts as the “broken window.” But, if the Graffiti is viewed as art, then it is simply art; something to be studied and scrutinized.
The fact that Graffiti is such a broad term, makes it difficult to draw a distinction. There are the obvious distinctions of vandalism, where areas are “tagged” with the Graffiti artists’ symbols and lettering. On the other hand lies a form of art, which are walls covered in beautiful portraits and designs. This website is called the “Movement of Graffiti Art” and shows some spectacular images.
The Graffitiing of a store’s riot gates puts an odd twist on how the general feeling within a community changes from day to night. Given the fact that riot gates are closed at night, if more Graffiti is visible at night, does this mean a certain area turns into a lawless wasteland when the sun goes down? This is an extreme overstatement, but if Graffiti does act as the “broken window,” then an emergence of Graffiti may entice nocturnal crime.
I survived…beyond and back
I caught this show on the Biography channel Sunday night. It got me really interested, since i realized this show is about people who have died and come back to life. At first I didn’t really think this was real, i mean i still have my doubts, but after watching this episode it seems pretty realistic to me. This particular episode was about two people, Sandy and Matthew.
Sandy’s story was that she drowned in a white water rafting accident. She was dead for 5 minutes and was resuscitated through CPR. During the 5 minutes that her heart has stopped, she witness death, and what it means to be dead. She says she firsts sees a flash show of her sons in the future, when she is losing consciousness. When she actually dies, she describes herself as seeing her lifeless body in the water. She watches her rag doll body, while she is being saved by the main leader in her excursion group. He pulls her out of the water and drops her onto the boat. When her lifeless body hits the bottom of the boat, it shocks her body enough to get her heart beating again. That is when she says, she suddenly remembers being back in her body and gasping for air.
The second story involves Matthew, another individual that died and came back. However, his story was a bit more horrific. He was shot in the head by a random drive by shooting, and was dead instantly by the shot. He was rushed into the ER and for 5 minutes the paramedic performed everything they could to get his heart beating. For those 5 minutes, he describes himself being changed in a dark abyss..which he says is hell. Believer it or not, but it seemed like a real story, and he is not the only one with such crazy stories.

Outsiders & Deviance
After reading Outsiders by Becker what I got from it was that Becker defined a deviant as someone who strays away from the rules and norms of some social group, so subsequently they then become an outside of that group. Also, that the deviant behavior is more of a certain group having a question of judgement about ones behavior or norms rather than just one person having a set of characteristics that makes them “deviant”. So ultimately, in order to label someone deviant, really means that you are accepting the norms and values of that social group who had the question the judgement about the person in the first place. Since we all don’t accept and practice the same values and norms, whether or not certain behavior is deviant really becomes reliant upon who your asking.
To find something that would better represent this, I googled “Deviant Article” – pretty basic right? Well I found an interesting and relevant article to help us consider and understand this theory. The article is called “Deviant Chrismas” by Su Epstein and basically it just supports what Becker is saying. To someone who celebrates Christmas, its the norm to be happy and joyful during this time of year. Becker uses the example of the reaction people get who celebrate Christmas and don’t partially like this time of year – they get called Scrooge or Grinch. These terms dont exactly hold the best associations attached to them, and these people can be considered deviant by others who celebrate and fit into the norm of having a joyful spirit around Christmas. However, if you ask someone who isn’t part of that group and doesn’t share those same values they could care less! Your not deviant to them! So again, when defining behavior as deviant, it really depends on WHO your asking.
