New Major in Communication Studies

The Department of Communication Studies is happy to announce the launching of a new major in Communication Studies in the fall of 2014 (pending final NYS approval).

The new major will offer four concentrations:

• Interpersonal and Group Communication
• Intercultural and International Communication
• Rhetoric and Public Advocacy
• Digital Communication and Culture

Communication Studies is one of the ten most popular majors nationwide for the following reasons: Human relationships are increasingly complex; communication technology has spurred a communications revolution comparable to the invention of printing; communication media exercise immense influence worldwide; the success of global organizations as well as social, economic, political, and cultural change depend on effective communication; communication competence is essential for a vibrant political culture and the accommodation of diverse groups within society.

The new major in Communication Studies will address these issues and provide an ideal springboard for a rapidly growing number of new careers, many established but fast-growing occupations, and a large variety of graduate degrees and certificate programs.
