RiP: A Remix Manifesto
I really enjoyed watching the documentary film, ‘RiP: A Remix Manifesto’. The film was very interesting and at the same time, it was a very good chance to learn and think of the importance about copyright, or property laws.
the Development of mass media, especially network system make easier for people to enjoy and contact to many of creative works. Moreover, many of simple and free programs led people’s direct participation of making or editing their own works.
Let’s think about the Youtube, the most famous web site to watching and uploading a video and music. From the giant corporations like Disney, Coca Cola, United airlines, to an ordinary person like me and my friends, so many pages for the various purpose, are existing and letting people upload their works. We can share everything on youtube, from political social problems to personal hobbies.
However, not everything on the youtube is legal things. Sometimes, we can see the video is blocked due to the original writher, or composer’s claim about the copyright. What is copyright? Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works.
A remix is a media that adding, changing and removing the original state of the items like songs, books, video or photograph. It is kind of creating something new based on the existing creatures. Remix becomes more and more popular with the development of mass media. Do you think the remixing other’s works is a stealing? My view of this issue is, it is depend on the situations. If someone using original soundtrack without crediting the original composer and making money with this remix song, it can be treated as stealing. However, crediting and using the originals properly can be a good for both original author and the editor like DJ and many of Youtuber.
Media becoming a kind of an industry. A big industry. Therefore, the issues dealing with the copyright will become serious problems and will getting worse. Artists like musicians and composers should be protected form stealing of their works. They should be compensated from people who using their works.
Final artist statement
As an artist, I tried to develop image that speak both to me and to viewers. The concepts of my art projects are based on my personal emotions, and also about matter of interest. I am inspired by my thoughts and feelings in my ordinary days.
My first work was a work of self-portrait. The main point is a picture of myself. I edited my face using Photoshop to show my inner emotions that I feeling nowadays. The image that I created is showing one aspect of myself, especially the mental agony. I also considered my work as the link between the world and me.
Using many colors with controlling level of light and contrast fascinates me during the work. Combinations of colors are the greatest method to show my various different looks. Each color contains a different sense of signification, but at the same time they are all related to one another. The colors might feel and interpret different depend on the condition of the viewer. The background picture that I chose is a photo of the Universe. As a human, I am a part of the Universe, which is a stretch away into infinity. I want to express my feeling of isolation and loneliness by locating my picture at the middle of the Universe.
The audio and the video projects were much lighter and enjoyable things compare to my self portrait project. Even they are not perfect creatures,I want to praise myself, because they were new efforts. The main point of the projects were learning how to deal with the programs, and show my development and enjoyment. Moreover, I want to express my matter of great interest, such as cooking, or classical musics, even Electronical music.
Throughout the works and new programs, I feel more close to myself, also learn how to share and appreciate me and other artists’ works.

Seeing the brick
Animation is a very intimate thing in people’s daily lives. Animation gives us pleasure from the cradle, such as watching educational animation, TV animation as well as watching animated films. However, as we growing up, it is easy for us to have preconception about animation. Usually animation is considered to be a thing of children. This kind of thinking tends to place a limit on the animation industry.
However, it is just as well that appearing and manufacturing 3D animated films makes people feel interesting, moreover, the theme of 3D animated films is getting wide and variety. For example, Toy story series, Tangles and Frozen were big hit and enormously successes around the world, consequently brought glory days of 3D animation industry. Currently, by Disney and Dream works, representative companies of the animation industry, plenty of 3D animated films are creating.
But even with the positive change, I personally feel bad that people still regard animation culture as an exclusive property of young generation. There is a word ‘Kidult’, refers to adults with childish tastes. And the so called ‘kidult culture’ has become a popular rising cultural phenomenon around the world. Movies like ‘Up’, “Ratatouille’ or ‘Wall-E’, make lots of adults to enjoy watching animation. Therefore, I wish many animation films will be manufacture for different age groups.
Paul_technologies as tool
It is quite interesting to appreciate masterpieces from many artists in the book. As the article mentioned at the beginning, the use of technologies in art field has increased. The artists in this book also work with various types of media to express themselves, simply from photographs to 3D printer.
The most interesting work of art to me was ‘Last Day of the Holidays’ by Patricia Piccinini in 2001. The work is a form of photograph with editing. In this photograph, one boy with a state board meets an alien creature. The creature is very small and cute, looks like a baby alligator without a skin. The boy also not afraid of the creature but he seems interest of it. This picture feels like one scene from science fiction movie. Especially the work reminds me of the film ‘E.T.’ by Steven Spielberg. Like the boy when he first sees E.T. in the movie, the boy in the photograph also wants to be a friend with the creature.
I searched the artist’s the latest pieces of works, and he works are usually about sculptures. She focusing on creating new living things named ‘Helper’ that does not exist in the world. Helpers look all different on each of her project, but all of them are somewhat between human and animal. The creatures look weird because their skins are like human or pig, have many wrinkles, with unrealistic faces. Because of the appearance of the sculptures, her works were really hard to feel at the first time. However, after few times of observation, I used to them and started to enjoy her works. Through the works, Patricia wants to address her concern about biotechnology especially experiment with human genome.
